Can someone explain the ‘first ‘09’ used here? What does that refer to?

My guess -- he was born 4/17/09. I'm guessing he's the first of the "born in 2009" to commit, or to commit to PSU. (He's a Class of 2027 recruit.)

In a number of youth sports, the age groups used to be called U-9, U-10, etc. (meaning Under 9 years old, etc.) However, some of the sports now call these teams by the year the kid was born (the 2008s, the 2009s, etc.) It gets even more confusing as they approach college age, as college recruiting numbers usually refer to the signing class.

So Horton would be a 2009 (or an '09), yet be a Class of 2027 recruiting class.

Well, Tuesday is the deadline to renew season tickets. Less than two months to the season opener, and yet STILL NO SCHEDULE!

We used to get the full schedule in May! And, yes, much like many other bad things, this can be traced to the B1G, and almost certainly due to TV. Why must fans always be the ones screwed? How are we supposed to plan for games? Plan for potential road trips? Coordinate with football games in the fall? (And while I’m loath to introduce football into a sacred hockey thread, having to wait so long now for football schedules is equally annoying. Trying to plan for Seattle next fall is going to be just as frustrating.)

I’m sorry for yelling at the clouds. Please resume your scrolling.

Yes this would be mostly correct. 2009 birth year players are mostly going into 11th grade, except the few that are often born later in the year and would be going into 10th grade. Rising 11th graders can commit at the start of that year.

Hockey in the US and Canada is generally played by birth year at the highest levels until 16U when the most elite players can go play "juniors" and then things just get really confusing. Horton is a Philly area kid who plays at a hockey prep school known for having the best program and players every year. Shattuck-St. Marys is best known for having Sidney Crosby and Nathan Mackinnon, but has had dozens of other NHL players come from there as well. Horton played there for the last two seasons. He will be on the US National Development Team Program team this coming season.

Yes. My Gophers were fortunate enough to nab Kyle Okposo amongst others. Kyle Okposo. Never had a shot at Crosby.

With your long experience in year-round hockey talk, if you can offer some tips

With your long experience in year-round hockey talk, if you can offer some tips and let us know we are doing it correctly we would appreciate it. After all #hockeyschool! 8)
More doom and gloom if you want to model Gopher hockey talk. I don't know why you would though.
