Some observations from the match against Creighton:
- it's the 1st match of the season, so things can change, rotations change, players improve, etc. In short, I don't worry too much about anything at this point in the season
- Kennedy Martin was a monster. A huge pickup by PSU
- It was interesting that Izzy, Spellman, and Martin were playing 6 positions. As a result, PSU was not making as many substitutions as they did last season during games
- CJ (Caroline Jurevicius) seemed comfortable when she was at OH
- Speaking of CJ, she's 6'2", but with new additions Martin (6'6") and Spellman (6'4"), she seemed small on the front line. LOL
- I was curious to see Spellman play, in that she had a monster game against PSU last season for tOSU, yet wasn't as dominant for many other tOSU games. Her performance against Creighton was mixed. She had some issues on receiving serve, and wasn't all that dominant when in the front line (she hit .182 in the match). She was a nice addition from the portal, but doesn't seem like a player that will dominate all the time
- CJ had her moments, and seemed to have expanded beyond just hitting the crap out of the ball, but also didn't have a great night. She hit .231
- Izzy looked like she had been playing with Martin and with Spellman for years. She seemed to get them the ball in great position. PSU WVB has been fortunate to have a number of great setters over the years, but she's likely to be remembered as one of the best when her PSU career is over
- I was a little concerned by the blocks. Sometimes it seemed to be the MB being late to slide over, and sometimes it seemed to be the OH/RS giving up the line. And perhaps, a lot of the issues were just a function of Creighton's Ava Martin being really, really, good
- if I'm not mistaken, none of the freshmen played in the match. Only time will tell how much that changes over the season
- did I mention how good Kennedy Martin was for PSU?
PSU has a very talented team, and barring serious injuries, should be in the running for Nationals. And things that don't seem perfect in August are often non-issues in November. It should be a fun season to follow.
