From wk 15 playoff rankings:
  1. Michigan
  2. Washington
  3. Texas
  4. Alabama
  5. Florida State
  6. Georgia
  7. Ohio State
  8. Oregon
  9. Missouri
  10. Penn State
How would it have played out with the new rule? As I see it, the champs from top 4 conferences would be seeded in order of their conference ranking, 1-4:
1- SEC Georgia
2- PAC 12 Washington
3- BIG 10 Mich
4- ACC Florida State

The remaining seeds would be according to their respective position in the final team ranking.
So PSU would be 10th and face the 7th seed, Ohio State, with the winner taking on the 2 seed, Washington, in the quarter finals as one of the New Year's Six games. The winners of the quarter finals would play the semi's in the remaining 2 New Year's Six games, and the finals would be a stand alone champioship game. Do I have that right?

I can say for sure that you’re right about PSU facing OSU.

Pretty much correct, except that Bama, not UGa, was the SEC champ and the top four seeds would be Michigan, Washington, Texas and Bama, in that order.

In the quick snippet I saw it did not mention a spot for the Group of Five. I wonder if the fine print gives the best of these teams a berth even if it's at a 12 seed. In the old format they had a shot at a NY6 bowl.
Old format---Selection committee chooses teams for Playoff and New Year’s Six bowl. The highest-ranked champion from among Group of 5 conferences (American, Conference USA, Mid-American, Mountain West, Sun Belt) qualifies for a New Year’s Six bowl

In college football, the Group of Five are five athletic conferences whose members are part of NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The five conferences are the American Athletic Conference (American or AAC),[a] Conference USA (CUSA), Mid-American Conference (MAC), Mountain West Conference (MW or MWC),https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_of_Five_conferences#cite_note-2 and Sun Belt Conference (SBC).[c][1][2][3][4][5]

MAJOR EDIT FOLLOWS:

It does, but it's kind of difficult to overlay going forward with conference re-alignment Using last year's rankings, Liberty, champs of CUSA and ranked 25th, bumps Oklahoma for the twelfth slot.

Take a suck on that ND.............
Last season Notre Dame was No. 16 in the final CFP rankings, so it would have been left out. As an independent football program that does not play a full conference schedule, the Irish can only secure an at-large bid and have no current way of procuring a top-four seed and, therefore, a first-round bye.

Imagine a season in which Notre Dame is the No. 1 team in all major polls, but ends up as the No. 5 seed in the new CFP format. That's a very real reality in future years.

"The new College Football Playoff will put the 4 highest ranked conference champions as seeds 1 through 4. That means that even if Notre Dame is the #1 ranked team in the country, they would get the #5 seed, requiring them to win 4 straight games to win a title. That's brutal," said Joe Pompliano.

Looks like a little Texas Hold-em going down today as the conferences and CFP finalize the details.............
Both sources said they expect Wednesday’s meeting of the commissioners who make up the CFP Management Committee to be quite contentious, with Big Ten and SEC leaders expected to lay out what they want in the new CFP contract that begins in 2026. One said they expect the Big Ten and SEC to push for revenue shares larger than those given to the Big 12 and ACC, creating further separation between the two groups. The other source said they thought one or both of the leagues might demand multiple automatic qualifiers per year — even as many as three or four for one conference.

Anyone pushing for a bigger slice of the pie is understandable. Insisting on a minimum number of slots is a great way to kill the playoff altogether. Color me for it!

If the payout is made based on number participating from a conference, the problem mostly goes away.

No, and I'm certainly not self-destructive. ;) I've always thought that 12 were too many. At then end of the season we pretty much know who the teams should be, and if it's more than four it's maybe an additional, 1 or 2, 3 max .

If the playoff has a mandatory four teams from any conference, let alone from two, as I've seen written, we might as well just replay the conferences(') regular season(s). A conference could wind up with 1.5- 2.5 champions: the one it crowned; the national champion that lost it's championship game; the national champion that didn't even make its championship game. Multiply it by two and we've achieved absurdity. Ratings will tank. ESPN will lose money, which is a good thing.

I think in this scenario we get these top seeds:

1. Michigan
2. Washington
3. Florida State
4. Texas
5. Alabama

I don't think for a second that if the CFB playoff committee had a spot for Alabama like this that they would have them jump Florida State and Texas. The whole nonsense that happened this past season was because there was a zero percent chance they were ever going to leave the SEC out no matter what, so they had to twist themselves into a pretzel to make it work. The problem for them was that Texas beat Alabama which is what caused the whole mess. Had Texas lost to Alabama but still finished with one loss (to Alabama) then we would have seen Texas left out and it would have been:

1. Michigan
2. Washington
3. Florida State
4. Alabama

They simply wanted to make sure the SEC was in the playoff and in the 5-7 that we are getting they wouldn't have had to throw out the entire season results to get the SEC in.

They do whatever is convenient for them. Quasi cherry picked ACC schedule for football, ACC for lacrosse, B1G for hockey.
Yeah but like me you must love some of those lax matchups. You going to Annapolis Saturday?
