Add Powell (yeah, yeah, I know) as an assistant. I could be interested.

Is this RT's attempt at a Spurrier type hire? Spurrier was only 60.
At 66, can you get 10 years like you did with Spurrier and is there any recruiting energy with this hire?
I think not!

Not a fan of this. How does he relate to the players at his age? He's never dealt with the transfer portal or NIL. Sounds like he doesn't like retirement and is looking for a hobby. I hope he has a heck of a staff lined up because he's going to need it.

Spurrier lost his step before he retired. Young players were no longer drawn to him just because he was a legend. Tanner is 66…he got out before his program started sliding. We do not need someone 66 for the head job!

I read that he retired from LSU in 2021 because of neck and back pain. He already turned down going back to Notre Dame and I believe he also turned down Miami last year. He may be content being retired.

I don’t hate it, but I sure don’t love it. This means we’ll be doing this again sooner than later…… But as noted above, if he can get us back to respectability, maybe we can win a few and draw a HR hire next go-round. At least this shouldn’t be an embarrassing hire.

Obviously not.

He's 64. This is a great hire. Anyone who thinks differently doesn't know much about NCAA baseball.

I think differently. He's older than Spurrier was when we first hired him. This is a lazy hire by a terribly unsophisticated guy who is way out over his skis as an AD.

The only way this remotely makes sense is if he brings in someone like Landon Powell as CIW, but even that isn't too bright.

I like it. We need some old school baseball after what we have been through. Wouldnt be a bad idea to let the next generation Gamecock HC learn something under him if possible too

Per WIKI, In his last season at LSU he was 38-23 and 13-17, and in his last season at USC Kinston was 37-25 and 13-17

But Mainieri did get to a Super vs Kinston's Regional

He'll be 67 in two months. Great coach. Stupid hire.

Is it too much to hope that they're hiring the next coach at the same time and he will be Mainieri's apprentice? And that that will work?

Man I hope this is just a rumor. If it happens, I hope it works out but I'd almost prefer Monte Lee over him. This just doesn't excite me at all

Maybe inflation has caught up to him in retirement and he needs a 7-figure salary for a few years. I haven't tracked the prices of Jitterbug phones, Depends, or Werthers candies, but I assume they've gone up like everything else.

Look at it from another vantage point: St. John's men's basketball hired legendary national champion basketball coach Rick Pitino last year. Pitino turns 72 in a few months. Mainieri could be his little kid brother.

or Mack Brown who has won 17 games in the last 2 years. He'll be 73 in August.
