Lemonis should be fired for even thinking of playing this guy, let alone hitting him 5th in a sec game.

this is Johnny long and Luke Hancock all over.

the fact people on this board clamor over hunter hines… who btw is our best hitter in sec play… any give a pass on playing people like downs is laughable

downs couldn’t play in conference USA let alone the sec.

Just a testament to our amazing coaching staff.

Far cry from Hancock. Luke actually has very hard to strike out, Downs on the other hand is walking K. . . . .

You're so worried about Hines makes me wonder why? If he's so great then just come dump on Downs and not mention the other guy. Really beginning to wonder if your Hunter himself. Hines seems to have come around the corner but yet you always make every post about home in some way.

Yep. Luke is was hard to strike out.. but he had about a 30 game stretch in his career here where we played at an acceptable level… and he someone parlayed that into starting every game for 3 years, despite being so bad at catcher they moved him to 1st where he finished 13th out of 14 sec first baseman in virtually every offensive category

kinda like Johnny long last year… and now the 5-6 homers that downs hit against guys throwing 828-5 down the middle has landed him a prominent sec role for the club despite the fact he’s 1 for 20 in sec play and hasn’t shown the ability to hit sec pitching since stepping foot in campus

but you are correct sir I’d take Hancock over downs… but it’s baffling how you could look at Hancock and says that’s an sec 1b or how you could ever look at downs at say he needs to be on an sec roster, let alone hitting in the middle of it

Johnny Long, for all his bullsh** and horrible batting, accounted for a lot of strike outs from opposing batters. Say what you will, but dude was a good catcher, he received the ball well and was an expert at framing ****** pitches from sometimes ****** pitchers! We don’t have that now, and our catchers now aren’t batting a whole hell of a lot better than him!
He had fire and emotion to him as well, he wanted to win and it showed! That’s the biggest thing to me, nobody on this team acts like they give a crap! Johnny Long did and I appreciate that. The bat flip against Ole Miss, and the hard block at the plate against Georgia, that’s some Vitello type stuff, and if we want to win- we need that kinda fire in our players!

The most frustrating part is that is that Nolan Stevens, one of our best hitters, sits on the bench so Downs can start.

Who gives a ****! I'm so sick of this dumb narrative. Isn't that what people love to say about Bryce Chance too? It's ridiculous that you can hit around the Mendoza line vs SEC pitching and people will excuse it because a guy is "hard to strike out"

Although the fire is great. Just having fire shouldn’t get anyone on the field.

long had the worst batting average of anyone in the sec with qualifying at-bats, and he spent all season long without throwing one person out… yes all season no runners caught stealing… on top of that he lead the league in pass balls

one thing long was not… was a good defensive catcher

and the fact we basically started the worst catcher and hitter in the sec… in the same person in long every day all season long for the most part… isn’t something that should be applauded. Johnny long had no business doing nothing but catching bullpens on any sec roster.

but we certainly didn’t learn anything from it… when we put downs in the game in any position. The fact Lemonis thinks long and downs are players you can win with in the sec is a huge problem. These guys would blend right in at a local juco
