Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien spent the last two seasons in Tuscaloosa, but his time may be coming to an end. Now, it’s reported O’Brien is one of the lead candidates for the New England Patriots‘ offensive coordinator position.

O’Brien is no stranger to the NFL, especially Foxborough.

For five seasons (2007-2011), O’Brien served in various offensive coaching roles for the Patriots. He ultimately became the offensive coordinator in his final season before accepting the Penn State head coaching job.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports O’Brien’s name has come up as a potential replacement for the offensive play-calling done by Matt Patricia and Joe Judge.

“Sources say Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is a strong option to return to his former home and assume his old role as OC under Bill Belichick for next season. This would be a potential answer to an important question facing the Patriots in the future.”
O’Brien is an experienced coach that has served as a head coach and high-ranking assistant/coordinator for major collegiate programs and playoff NFL teams.

His future in Tuscaloosa is unclear, as he agreed to a two-year contract with the Crimson Tide, but both sides have seemingly remained quiet regarding the possibility of an extension.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama football and reports that link Bill O’Brien to other coaching opportunities.

TNG moving back to the NFL? Sounds about right. Belichek retires in a few years and TNG takes over.

Deja vu all over again, huh? Step down from head coach/GM.

O'Brien has to go through a considerable amount of "rehab" before he gets anothe NFL HC job, if he ever gets one at all. Normally, there are owners willing to take a chance on a failed HC, most of them less accomplished than O'Brien. Unfortunately, O'Brien's reputation precedes him and his is especially hard to fix.

No one benefitted more from Penn State sanctions than FLO. Took two 7 win seasons and turned them into an NFL HC job and college coach of the year awards.

I think O'Brein the NFL coach was just fine, it was his job as GM that cost him.

What cost O'Brien his job was his running roughshod over the rest of the Texans organization. His record was fine, but he didn't win quite enough to protect himself from all the knives.

Ordinarily, a coach with O'Brien's record shouldn't have difficulty finding another HC gig within a relatively short time. But O'Brien's reputation in the league is poison and it takes more time to wash that away, if it ever happens.

O’Brien’s problem is his huge ego without the the results.

Let's just say that O'Brien's ego and his results are out of proportion. Some coaches, notably Belichick, strike the right balance. Coach can get away with a lot more **** when he wins a lot.

BOB is a huge upgrade over Patricia. Patricia is a D coach so he's a square peg in a round hole as an OC.
