See the link below. From the article:

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored the 800th goal of his career Tuesday night, becoming the third player in NHL history -- behind Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe -- to reach the milestone.

He also became the first to do it with a single franchise, and it came as part of a hat trick performance in a 7-3 victory over the Blackhawks in Chicago.

"This ... it's huge. It's huge for hockey, it's huge for the organization," a drained Ovechkin told his teammates in the locker room after the win. "And to do it with you guys, it's special."

The 37-year-old left winger tallied his historic marker in the third period of his 1,305th career game. It was also Ovechkin's 20th goal this season, giving him an 18th consecutive campaign with at least 20. Only Brendan Shanahan (19 straight) and Howe (22) have accomplished the same feat.

Tuesday also marked the 162nd multigoal game of Ovechkin's career, which trails only Gretzky's mark of 189 games. He picked up his first two of the night in the opening period.”

I remember fondly that our good friend The Glov was a huge Ovechkin fan. o_O

Gretzky has the most goals all-time, 894. Will Ovechkin stick around long enough to pass him? It seems possible. At 37, Ovechkin had a hat trick last night.

A friend of mine went to D.C. a few years ago to watch Ovechkin because he wanted to see him live. He came away disappointed. He’s a hockey guy and noticed that Ovechkin wouldn’t do all the little things to help the team. Said he stood at the blue line tapping his stick calling for the puck so he could score, but wouldn’t go into the corner to dig out a puck or do much of anything besides look for his teammates to dish him the puck.

His teammates love him. I know a couple of Caps a bit (kids are friends) and they mentioned the team is allowed to have cheesesteaks when they visit Philly because Alex asks for them. Nutritionist doesn’t like it, but Alex gets what he wants. I’ve seen Alex a good bit and he’s a very hard worker. Would love to hear your friend’s review of Gretzky….

I played craps with some of the Caps, including Ovechkin, at Rivers in pittsburgh when they were in town once. Seemed like decent enough guys. That said, I’ve seen Ovechkin throw his share of cheap shots at players over the years, so I’ve always considered him a bit dirty (see, hit on Gonchar in 2009(?) playoffs as an example).

Not sure what cheesesteaks have to do with digging loose pucks out of the corner? Being a popular teammate and being a selfish player aren’t mutually exclusive. Regardless, my friend grew up with Billy Guerin. I trust he has more hockey knowledge than I do.

AS a big Pens fan who lives in central MD, I disagree. Ovie is top 5 all time in hits given. Some may be dirty, yes, but he is more than willing to mix it up in the 'corners'. One of the highest shooting percentages of all time too. I dont necessarily think he makes everyone around him better a la Gretzky, Lemieux or Crosby but he is not what your friend says.

Fair enough. I see both sides. I get the hits argument but, as you said, is it to get control of the puck or to just deliver a dirty hit to send a message? The Caps have a reputation with condoning that nonsense when Trots was there and they continue to pay that POS Tom Wilson. On the other hand, it seems to me that when things aren’t going well, sometimes he shuts it down a bit. Pretty sure I remember that when he was playing in the Olympics. I’m not saying he not a great player, just maybe not on the same level as the all around players you mentioned.

One reason he has such a high shooting percentage is because he is fed the the puck on power plays. He stands on his spot and lets go with one of the best slap shots ever. Power plays have a man advantage therefor, less defense. I would like to know the number of goals scored power play vs 5on 5. I suspect his full strength goals are not on par with the best all around players. I agree that he doesn’t necessarily make players around him better like Gretzky, Crosby and a host of others. I am not trying to detract from his game but no knowledgeable hockey fan would confuse him with the best complete players In hockey.

He digs pucks out of corners too. Think your friend is biased.

Maybe? Are you?

Hardly - I’m a Pens fan. But, basing your entire impression of an elite, all time goal scorer on one game where he didn’t dig for pucks is pretty telling. Cheers.

Lol. Getting your panties in a bunch because I have a different opinion than yours is telling also. Cheers.

Wait, so you share your friend’s bizarre, absolutely incoherent opinion of Ovechkin too? Maybe stop watching hockey and find something a little easier to follow. Prost!

Pens fan and former Ovechkin hater. When your team is playing him your heart stops any time he is tee'd up on a power play. I saw a special on him on the NHL Network 7-8 years ago and became a fan. They followed him back to Russia where he grew up. He grew up in an apartment complex and he went over to visit one of his childhood friends and the guy didn't even bother putting on pants for the camera crew. Had on a pair of tighty whities and a t-shirt. It was hilarious. He also lost his older brother when he was 10 years old. I put my hater card away after I watched that.

It really stinks that Mario had health and injury issues. He would have been really high up on all these lists. Special player.

Thanks CD, pretty much as I suspected. However, Ovechkin has fewer PP goals than I would have guessed.
Ron Francis has some pretty good numbers…didn’t remember him as THAT good.

Mario is also #2 all time in points per game behind Gretzky. Ovechkin is 29th (Crosby is at #7, Malkin at #16). Gretzky's numbers are bonkers but he played with a stacked team at Edmonton.

Why do I get the feeling Ovechkin had two choices in life? Be a hockey player or be a Russian mobster. And why are both professions so similar when discussing him?

Ovechkin is a hell of a player, plain and simple. He plays physically and can deliver a big hit, which I love. Anybody that hits a lot has the chance of having some that are over the line. I’m an Islanders fan and as much as he’s killed them, I’ve always respected his game.
