Yeah, but that's a cover. It's a great cover and can stand on it's own, but without Dylan, it would have never been written and he would have never been famous for it (just like Hey Joe was a cover also, he is primarily recognzed for the song).
What did Dylan think? This- “I liked Jimi Hendrix’s record of this and ever since he died I’ve been doing it that way,” adding: “Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it’s a tribute to him in some kind of way.”

Congrats on the guitariversary! I've been kicking around giving it a shot myself at age 61, you've inspired me to actually do it. I'm going to start the search for a teacher today.

Fortunately, I have a bit of a head-start -- been playing sax for decades and I can read music, so I don't need to learn what a quarter note is, etc. Goal is to become a competent rhythm guitarist. "Check out guitar toast! He knows...all the chords. But it's strictly rhythm he doesn't wanna make it cry or sing...they said an old guitar is all he can afford. When he gets up under the lights to play his thing...:
When I started at age 70 (wife 69), I didn't think I'd last 6 months, and thought I might be able to learn to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star at best. Thankfully we have a great teacher (40 year old male), and my wife and I push each other, so we're much better than I ever thought we could be. We can play hundreds of songs, from Bach to the Beatles, and we love it. I have not missed a day of practice in 5 years. Our teacher made it easy. He said "Just promise me 5 minutes a day". Well 5 minutes turns into 30 or 40. Good luck with your quest!

The version of "Heroes" that Bowie did at Live Aid was so good it was mind bending. That song has such a positive message and vibe.
All the attention is on Queen at Live Aid. They were great. But Bowie followed them and was better, IMO. I don’t say that lightly.

And MBP was never done better than this....Dylan, McGuinn, Petty, Young, Clapton, and Harrison.
My gawd, what a group!

As an aside, next week marks 5 years since my wife and I took up playing guitar at age 70. I had been playing a Tagima but just bought this Fender to celebrate. I love the look and sound. With 5 years of lessons, and not a day of missed practice, I am getting pretty decent. It's no surprise that my wife is even better. Look for news of our tour schedule coming soon!

Funny, I was thinking exactly of those last two as sleepers. It really is impossible to limit greatness. Layla is an absolute masterpiece.
Agreed….Layla is an absolute masterpiece, constantly amazed how few recognize it.

Rock to an extent is about diversity, passion, attitude, not just of the performers, but of the audience as well. A one size fits all list is, by definition, silly.

While it may not be as musically developed as others by them, The Who’s “Bargain” always hit me in a direct, Hemingway.

I don’t think I’ve ever tuned away from “London Calling” over the airwaves.

“Gimme Shelter” all day from the Stones.

I have a nearly unhealthy obsession to “Accidents Never Happen” by Blondie. Friday while cooking dinner, wine poured, after closing the door on a hard work week.

Despite its outdated lyrics, “Oliver’s Army” by Elvis Costello, please. Hell, while we’re on the mercenary theme, “Let’s Go” by The Ramones.

“Comfortably Numb.” If you snuck “Us and Them” in there too I wouldn’t protest.

“Losing My Religion.” C’mon everybody can sing that one and feel the passion. Much like “Behind the Wall of Sleep” or “Blood and Roses” by the Smithereens.

Speaking of roses, “So Young” by the Stone Roses.

“Shadowplay” by Joy Division.

And I’d run through a wall for some Hole. “Violet.”

Rock is yours. Don’t listen to the Man making lists.

Obviously way too subjective a topic to ever be settled.
For my personal taste, the top five would all be Dylan.
Also, my own opinion is that all Skynard works should be relegated to the tomb where they now store Confederate statues.

Lot of great songs and artists on this list but the most played song by an artist in the 20th century - on radio and TV - was "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers with over 8.2 million plays in the U.S

Skynard's Second Helping is a masterpiece. Respect your opinion, but that album makes them legitimate, IMO.

Agree, "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers has to be on the list. It's also been played in several movies

better, but you can't leave the Stones, Jimi, or Dire Straits out
Didn’t mean this as the list but as suggestions to consider. This is so subjective and individual that no list will be perfect or satisfy everyone. I could have easily included Stones, Beatles, Jimi and others with no regrets.😁

This is why so subjective, I don’t consider it rock more pop. Same with Elton John …pop

1. Stairway to Heaven, 2. Bohemian Rhapsody, 3. Hotel California, 4. Free Bird, 5. (I can't get no) Satisfaction.

I was hard pressed to think of a song that should replace any of the aforementioned.

Shalom
My wife hired The Flamin Caucasians to do my 40 th birthday party . They are a Philly/NJ house band some of you may know. Lead singer shared the mic with me on Satisfaction . It was a blast for me maybe not for the other attendees . One of my all time favorite songs .

Even more than “Orgasm Addict” by Buzzcocks? Who’d have known?

I’ll chime in on the Who. For me it is “The Real Me”. That songs starts off with outstanding bass tones, pounding drums and great guitar licks. . It is especially powerful when you listen to the serene And calm opening with waves lightly crashing. The transition is immediate and awesome
