At least this one is playing time.

That perhaps is even more troubling than the NIL scenario because there are lots of players on every team in the the entire country who aren't playing as much as they want. We saw what happened once a few players opted out of bowl games; it became an epidemic. This could pose a major problem if the same thing happens.

Ya know it's kinda weird. Throughout the history of red shirts, I've always heard words used to describe getting them like 'assigned, designated, awarded, declared and such. My assumption was the school made the decision who gets the designation. Just seems weird that the players themselves can claim them as thought they are there for the taking. Go figure.

But hasn't it been going on for a long time? Just behind closed doors?

Also, it is entirely different, imo, for a starting qb to pull out of games than a 3rd or 4th string rb who want getting playing time. In years past, he would complain to coaches, nothing would be said publicly, and he'd move on at the end of the year.

If all you needed on a college football team were the Saturday starters. the rosters would be a lot smaller.

Agreed. But how many guys who never see the field transfer out at the end of the year? It used to be 3,4 or 5 a year. These guys absolutley had conversations with the staff about preserving eligibility years. This is just a public version of something that goes on every year on virtually every team.

But those players can and do still serve a very important purpose to the team during practice sessions.

In days gone by, redshirting was not principally in the province of the players, even in stacked positions. Coaches initiated it, sometimes with input from doctors, trainers, or academic people. A player was redshirted. He/she didn't redshirt himself/herself. The change now owes to the total anarchy engendered by the transfer portal and its unlimited use. This might represent personal player "progress", but it's making responsible, practical roster management virtually impossible.

Don't disagree. That impact is still quite different than starters bailing for NIL "misunderstandings"

Right. Players essentially control the roster now. Whether it's NIL issues, fake injuries or playing time, coaches no longer have any real control.

Yeah in the past, you could play in one or two games or not play at all but that didn't mean you were automatically red shirted. At least that was my understanding. In fact it would be quite comical to hear a player claim he was on his own. This type of progress is certainly debatable for sure.

UNLV was having a good start to this season 3-0, it's a shame that this development had to happen right now.

It's not too hard to read between the lines on this one. Sluka and his family and agent tried to extort UNLV, using their early season success and allure of a playoff bid to squeeze them for NIL money.

They didn't count on UNLV telling them to pound sand. Sluka's dad said they are not counting out a reconciliation, but UNLV has moved on and already named a starter for this weekend. Players seem excited to be moving on from Sluka as well.

It'll be very interesting to see how this issue progresses. With players opting out of "meaningless" bowl games for whatever mythical reasons they contrive, I wonder when you'll start seeing players opting out a team's remaining regular season games once they fall out of bowl contention. It only makes sense. If you don't want to play in a bowl game b/c of some imagined fear. Why play in several games when you don't even have a shot of making a bowl.
