I feel like in the normal working world, if you were horrible at your job, then claimed racial discrimination for not getting chosen for the best assignments and subsequently filed a lawsuit for it, your employment would be terminated pretty quickly. How is this boner still employed??

Firing someone for suing you? That doesn't usually work out well....(as in, it's illegal to do so).

Perhaps the perfect strategy. MLB has a hard time just firing him because of the union protecting him. How much harder is it going to be now that he has sued MLB and lost?

Yeah, pretty much it. I’ve always thought that MLB umpires “get tenure,” amirite?

Not at all what I was getting at. I refuse to believe there is no “for cause” anywhere in there. Then again I’m in an “at will” state, and have lived the life of a government contractor so removing someone is effortlessly easy.

EDIT: I guess a little bit what I was getting at….. my point about it being easy to fire someone for cause based on job performance stands

Right - can’t be fired for suing, but can be for cause. Still, lots of employees sue their employers and stay employed (especially on the government/military).

In a world where getting broad agreement on anything is all but impossible, the only people who don't agree that Angel Hernandez is an absolutely horrible umpire are those with no opinion and Angel Hernandez. We should be grateful to Mr. Hernandez for his efforts to bring our nation together. I think that the answer to your question is that the CBA between the union and MLB makes a guy with his time in the majors close to untouchable.

Every team should do this when he's behind the plate. You want to suck as an ump? The catchers should suck for his games. Fixed.

I get the emotion but regardless of how bad an umpire might be, intentionally drilling him with a pitch is a classless move.

Are used to think that, but now I kind of go back-and-forth based on what a professional umpire told me. This guy that I know is not one of the main guys in the big leagues he primarily does minor league games, but since he lives in Central Maryland, if they know that a crew that’s doing a nationals, Orioles or Phillies game needs a guy he gets sent there as a replacement or emergency guy in the locker room.
He said, as long as he’s been umpiring, which is 30+ years, he’s seeing more and more guys these days make a game about them. He’s definitely old school and would go toe to toe screaming at earl Weaver but he’ll tell you there are guys now that Think people came to the ball park to watch them umpire. One of the guys he worked with who was the Homeplate umpire, actually cussed out the ball boy because he didn’t think he was bringing him in the balls fast enough. He said the same guy also told the home team manager that letting his guys dance after an extra base hit and pointer the crowd was disrespecting the game. The manager then told him to shut up and let these 18 year old Hispanic kids do what they wanted. The home plate umpire then rung the next batter up on a pitch that was a foot outside and everybody in the stadium, including the other umpires knew it was to get back at the manager.

Doesn’t matter if it’s an at will state when it comes to discrimination and retaliation.

Firing somebody who then claims race = $, then resignation. I’ve seen it up close a dozen times. Racism costs $

For the few fellow Braves fans today, sit back and enjoy the Angel the A55wipe show.

Whenever I quickly scroll through the threads, sometimes this one looks like "Angel Hernandez died again". I then think "if only". He could very well be a great guy on a personal level but, geez, he sucks balls as an umpire.

I wanna be part of THAT union.... I can be completely incompetent at my job and still have it????

I've had it explained to me before, but it never made any sense. Basically, MLB doesn't have the stones to get aggressive with the umps union. They're the least accountable among all the officials unions in pro sports.

Of course robo umps are coming and MLB has told them to pound sand when they've cried about it.

B1G refs are probably the least accountable.

Lol. No. Is it really bad? I don’t really find most of the ACC to be that relevant enough to watch.

If you have Peacock, go and watch the replay of CMU/ND. Those are ACC refs. I've seen better officiating at the high school level. It's beyond bad.
