Thinking about an early fall trip. Any suggestions as where to stay or visit would be much appreciated.

Been there once - a day trip to York Beach from Boston, "mainely" just to say that I've been to Maine. That's all I can offer.

Went once on a business trip, 20 years ago, all I remember is whatever city I was in, was very proud of their toothpicks and called itself the toothpick capital of the world, but the quality was the same as elsewhere , LOL

I went to Maine on my first honeymoon. We didn't know anything about Maine. We booked a hotel in Portland away from downtown. It's a great downtown. But we ended up taking cabs to see the real town. We talked to the person at the desk and they had another hotel in Bar Harbor and suggested we go there. So we rented a car and did just that. We took interstate and main highway up there, stopping off in some smaller towns. If you've seen one LL Bean, you've seen them all. Bar Harbor was very nice and we were within walking distance of everything. There are whale tours, but we were running short on cash by that point. Eat the lobster in a restaurant. The resorts overcharge. Have the chowder. Pack some warmer clothes. It went from 80-mid 40s when it rained in mid August. One odd memory I have from there is that bottled/canned beer was 16 oz. and liquor was sold in grocery stores. They also LOVE the southern accent up there.

On the last day, we drove back down to Rockport because we were flying out of there. We took the scenic route down the coast, stopping for lunch in one harbor town that had a big waterfall, can't remember the name. But really, after a few of those harbors they also look the same.

All things considered, I loved it and would return. Mind you, this was 1990s. Surely, things have changed some.

You can buy liquor in grocery stores in Louisiana and California too. Didn't know that about Maine; thanks.

I think Camden was the harbor town we ate in that had the waterfall right under the restaurant. Beautiful views.

Maine has some very beautiful seaside scenery particularly at Cape Porpoise and Rockport.
You can get great lobster and chowder just about anywhere, but if you are near Cape Elizabeth you can not beat The Lobster Shack at 2 Lights. Kennebunk, Kennebunk Port and Qgunquit are quintessential New England seaside towns that are worth checking out.
If you are going in early Fall prepare to pay premium rates for any lodgings, but the Fall Foliage is an incredible experience.

BTW: In Maine you can get a lobster roll anywhere even McDonalds. Had I not seen it for myself I would not have believed it.
(And no, hell no I did not try it)

Beautiful, rugged country, hard to go wrong with a trip there. Nice people too in the small towns. Lobster and chowder are delicious but way overpriced in my opinion. The harbor towns are great to visit, Boothbay, BarHarbor, etc...

The lighthouses if you're into that.

Don't know much about the interior, it's rugged with mountains and water.

That may have changed as it was a 1/4 century ago or more. I really see no reason other than bureaucracy that it's not that way everywhere.
It is because of religion, ultimately. Before there was Y'all Qaeda, there was Prohibition. The effects linger.

Acadia is one of the most beautiful places in the country. It's an absolute must visit if you go to Maine.
I would agree with this, I lived in Boston from '89 to '96 and traveled New England a good bit. Acadia is worth the trip.

Visit Kennebunk in October! Beautiful, all the tourist are gone you can walk the beaches without crowds and te temperatures are great.
I have a nephew who moved there so visit from time to time.
The seafood is the best but all the other food is just ok. ( not as good as southern food.)

Went a few years back as wife and I went from home up 95 thru all the eastern states and we were in Boston at a duck boat tour and she told me to try a restaurant in Wells, Maine called Tge Wells Diner, food was great and packed, went on up to Bar Harbor, Acadia was great and we also did a lobster boat tour which the captain showed us how to catch lobsters, nice area up there.

Been to Maine a bunch. Take the coastal highway of US 1 up the mid coast area. We like to stop at almost every little coastal town along the way. My favorite places are Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor (Bah Hahbuh), Boothbay Harbor and LL Bean. If you're feeling exploratory, go down to the Massachusetts North Shore and checkout the artist colony at Rockport and the fishing village of Gloucester where the TV series Wicked Tuna originates. You will love the summertime weather.

Boothbay Harbor is a fun place and it's truly lobster central. Take a lobster boat tour. Bar Harbor and Acadia are also premier locations. Walk the bar when the tide is out. Take a ride on the big Schooner there. If you desire a little more quaint, hit any of the coastal towns. The southern part is more "beachy". But that's not why you go there.

Went on mission trip in October 2019 to do construction work on mission house. Didn't get to see a whole lot but it was during a pumpkin festive and saw some of the biggest pumpkins I'd ever seen. Even had boat races with the pumpkins.

I was in Maine in August and remarked to a shop owner how nice the summer weather was there. He said "Stick around, you'll see some snow in about a month.
We had a family reunion in some cabins by a lake in northern New Hampshire. I was looking forward to cool refreshing weather. It was over 90° and humid. The cabins had no A/C.

We went all the way to Vermont on college tours with my daughter. It was a heat wave even in the mountains. But my daughter was just in Pittsburgh and said people there were complaining about 84 degree days.
