The only thing I'm confused about is that people continue to refer them by their royal titles. I thought a stipulation of their split from the family was that they gave up their titles.
They can no longer be referred to as His/Her Royal Highness. They did not give up their titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

My wife is something like a ninth cousin who knows how many times removed from Charles' maternal grandmother.
We are also distantly related to the Montbattens (Prince Phillip's family), and the Romanovs obviously through our German line.
On my maternal grandfather's side, we have lineage back to the Bourbon kings in France, and a former governor of Minnesota. Villa Louis in Prairie du Chien, WI is an old family homestead.
My maternal great grandfathers side can trace itself back to the First Families of Virginia, namely the Custis family.

Sounds like there may be a connection to George Washington in there too.

My wife is a distant relative of Elizabeth's mother.

I have none of the aforementioned. The first of my family (on either side) come to the US from eastern Europe around 1880.
