I have a long time friend coming to town this weekend for his first trip to Starkville/DNF and wanted to share a little history/evolution versus what it looks like today. It would be great if there were some of the original up to just before they razed it all and built the new DNF. Thanks much.

I've got LOTS of them but you can only post 6 or 7 at a time. At the risk of hurting some posters feelings, here are a few of people having a good time. I'll try to organize some more and post them separately. Some of these I took, some I captured from posts online.

Coach Gregory.....the way we were told. In the late 60's / early 70's SPD hated the left field lounge and actually started harassing students there. The school caved and made some noise about shutting it down. At that point coach Coach Gregory got involved and had a "prayer meeting" with the school's top brass. At the meeting he supposedly explained to the administration how important the loyalty of the students in left field had become to him, his team and the program and told them in no uncertain terms if they shut down the LFL (wasn't called that at the time) he would seek employment elsewhere. At this point the school had a "prayer meeting" of their own with City officials and the harassment magically stopped . This is what we were told at the time .

The Hump opened in '75 so the first one would have been about summer of '74 since everything is green. 2nd one probably '72 or '73?? when the Hump was being built but had no roof yet. The Dude in bottom of both photos.

1743693808836.png This is the first drawing of the present Dude. It was made on the back of a napkin in a bar in Omaha by one of the architects in attendance at the World Series in '18 I believe.

The first game ever played at the Dude was in the spring of '67, and yours truly was in attendance. Paul Gregory's son, Beau Gregory, was the starting pitcher and winning pitcher, against Illinois Wesleyan. What I always heard when it first opened, was the area beyond the left field fence was the only area in Oktibbeha County where the city and campus police looked the other way and allowed anyone to drink beer. I observed that to be the case also on the occasions when I wandered out there during games.
