she was evacuated from the Pacific Palisades and from what they can deduce the house is gone. G-d bless she's alive. Fortunately, my amigo has a condo in Florida that she's relocating to on Friday. 95 years old lost all material things and forced to move. What a head trip.

Over 70,000 residents told to evacuate. Sadly, two dead and the fire is not contained.

Fire is moving at 5 football fields per minute. Unreal
The speed of these fires is staggering.... Just watched them say fire embers are flying and moving at 300 ft per second.... A football field per second. Crazy.... no let up in the winds the amount of homes that will be burned to the ground after this is all said and done will be astounding....

It seemed like the national news had no idea how bad this was going to be as of last night. I had an idea that something was brewing on X, but none of the news stations were really covering it. So we turned on a YouTube feed from a local news station in Los Angeles. Given how the winds were blowing and were expected to persist, they really had no chance with this one. The best they could do was to try to get as many folks as possible to evacuate safely. I hope they were able to do that.

Pics are horrific.

As someone whose home was attacked and damaged by water last year, I express solidarity and sympathy to those whose houses were attacked and damaged by fire.
"Attacked." Apt choice of words. Your words are mine, albeit I wouldn't have come close to your sad eloquence if I had tried.

The $$$ impact is going to be astronomical. Nowadays it seems that every natural disaster is $$$$$$ costly. A whole lot of middle-class people are being hammered. Jobs will be lost, but bills never stop coming. Hard.

I still have a lot of bills coming due for that ******* hurricane, and the costs are ridiculous. The plumbers and electricians and tradesmen, god bless them, are kicking my *** economically. They can raise their prices to reflect inflation (and they're not shy about it!), while my wages have been stagnant for too long. It sucks really badly. I could say something political right now but I won't so I won't be a hypocrite.

Right. Like most things, prevention is cheaper. But, you can’t convince the right people to think that way sadly.

Echo Park son 1 and GF were getting on a plane out of Baltimore yesterday afternoon. Thankfully they hung back. Moms and I are upset because they’re going back Friday. Ironically we started their philly house hunting this Christmas break after 8 years in LA.
Pasadena fire is the most threatening to their apartment. His eurovan is street parked a few blocks north of Sunset, it would be the first loss. I want them to stay here but he’s “a grown asss man”.
Our man Balls (Hermosa Beach) is getting married in simi valley in September, who knows how this fire will impact the venue. Schit is completely insane.

There are a lot of facets to this disaster. We always knew it was coming.

On a more cheerful note, it’s been 325 years since the 1700 Cascadia earthquake; it’s due. The world is lurching from crisis to crisis.

My son-in-law’s aunt lives (lived) in Pacific Palisades on the corner of Carthage and de la Paz. There was a video this afternoon showing the across the street neighbors house on fire. We believe her 2.5 million dollar home is no more (she bought it over 30 years ago for around 200k). Her parents just passed away this past year and she was working on a project organizing all the family pictures and other memorabilia. It’s all gone now. She may have to move in with my daughter and son-in-law in Livermore, CA. That is, if she is permitted to work remotely.

A lot of long-term residents there, bought their houses decades ago. Sad.

Unfortunately this is like clockwork in this part of the country. Plentiful rain with flooding because the previous fire storms left the ground bare, plenty of green lush brush afterwards, plenty of dry weather after the rain, strong winds from the northwest just needing a spark. And the cycle begins again.

If it's like clockwork, you'd think the hydrants would have pressure - you know, when they're needed most.

Media reports the LA Mayor reduced the Fire Department budget by $17Million for the current year. How does one rationalize this reduction in a basic Utility? Did anyone in the political sphere ask 'What If' and attempt to prepare any type of backup plan?

I suppose the honest, truthful answers will never come. Unfortunately similar to the hurricane damage here in FLA, it will take at least 5 years at least to recover, also Northern CA and Hawaii are still devastated. Our only hope is for residents to be alive, even though their memories are gone.

About the $17 million cut, this isn’t true.

“The assertion (that the mayor cut the LAFD budget by $23M) is wrong. The city was in the process of negotiating a new contract with the fire department at the time the budget was crafted, so additional funding for the department was set aside in a separate fund until the deal was finalized in November. In fact, the city’s fire budget increased by more than $50 million year-over-year compared to the last budget cycle…”

As I indicated - 'the media reports' and evidently you are providing 'some truth' not told by the officials. Thank you for additional info.

Just found out today my son-in-law’s aunts house in Pacific Palisades was one of the very few to survive. Very lucky! Lots of soot both outside (exterior) and inside of the house. Now comes the major worry of potential looting. Current post fire photo below.

Ok hmm . Here’s an X post from the owner of the LATimes . Just saw him on tv blaming mismanagement and fund misappropriation .
