Apparently many on here forgot how coaching changes work.

Here’s who’s rumored to leave
Two WR coaches who are being replaced by a State alum
A ST coordinator who was moved from a position coach and may want to coach his position again
A RB coach who is a career defensive coach that was rumored to be moved from defense at the suggestion of the new HC
A DL coach who is a Leach guy and was not hired by the DC and current HC
It’s kind of easy to read between the lines on these moves. It’s not to abandon what Leach has built. Some of these were inevitable or are being done to improve the staff.

You can't hire someone then handcuff them by dictating who they have to keep.

The new HC is going to bring in their guys and maybe keep a few from the previous staff.

Its happens all the time.
And changes need to be made. Not that things were going poorly by any means…. But leach ran a system and program that was his. Arnett can’t succeed and shouldn’t be asked to try and to replicate what Leach has done. He should be given the opportunity and to run the program his way.

BUT didn’t you hear that our staff would be different next year in some obvious way?!?!?! We must overreact!!!

It's not that changes are being made...it's that if we were going to make wholesale changes then we should have had a real search instead of just hiring a guy to make sure we kept a class intact that fits a scheme we're dumping.... it's poor management from that perspective....

This looks more like Larry Templeton just hiring a guy because he's cheap...

Just to be devils advocate, we did in fact hire Arnett to keep things in place. I understand that it’s his team now, but we all know we wouldn’t have hired him had we done a national search. So there’s some validity to the concerns if he runs off some folks that are vital members of the staff.

That said, I’m pretty sure that the guys that will be leaving are not what I describe above.

But either way, all this crap is just rumors at this point.

We hired him to keep recruits in place and defense in place. Good chance he was gonna be DC at a big school next season.

I still think it was a big gamble to hire him and lot will be seen in next two years

I feel like a few just expected is to keep the exact same staff in place which that would just be crazy.

Arnett was hired to keep stability on his side of the ball, keep the culture that Leach instilled, and because he seems like he might be ready to be a HC.

All anyone should expect out of Arnett is to hire the best OC he can find for scoring points with current players and the ability to appeal to future recruits with a good system, then let that guy pick everyone he wants for that side of the ball as far as assistants, and run that whole side of the ball his way. That’s the freedom he got from Leach.

The hard part is that whats best for 2023-2024 offense might not be whats best for 2025 and beyond. So balancing those needs will be difficult.

It wasn't that long ago there was mass bitching about our scheme, now people are pissed our offensive coaches are leaving. Can't have it both ways.
I think most of the people bitching about losing coaches are the same folks where were bitching about people bitching about our scheme.

We had folks who thought it was a good idea to give Spurrier Jr the OC job.

Let's get this out there. Spurrier was not the most well-liked coach. Hollinghead had one season as a coach. Thackery looks good but Peterson is way better at that job. Phelps hasn't been great on the recruiting side at all. Arnett is bringing in guys he believes are better. Had we not made this hire, we had no recruiting class and would see a huge portal loss. We'd be starting interviews after an AD is hired (still hasn't happened). Portal closes in a couple weeks before opening again later.
We need a new offense too. This offense has been poor. The defense has carried this program under Leach. IF Briles is the guy, part of his scheme is Air Raid based. It's not a huge jump. He is more flexible than Leach. No one on the offensive staff has ever called plays at the P5 level.

If we get turner that's an immediate upgrade there. That dude has had some beasts. People need to listen to dykes and others like littrell talk about modifying air raid. Lot of coaches have moved to ther mixing in either spread run concepts or veer. The line and receivers and running backs can do that. Look at some of Briles former qbs before Arkansas. I think he can work with a more leach style qb although he would prefer someone with legs that can run.

Exactly

so if we have growing Pains doing a rebuild next year, and instead of a ten win season, it’s ok because down the road we think we can get back to a ten win season, maybe ?

none of it makes sense. If you had a strong AD in place, either you have a national search for an experienced head coach or you promote ZA from within In order to keep continuity of a successfully built program on the rise. We are doing neither here.

A national search for an experienced head coach was never happening based on the timing that everything went down. Not one with P5 experience, anyway. If Leach had retired the morning after the Egg Bowl it might have been a different story…..but as it were that game of musical chairs was over and the music stopped long before Leach passed. The best we could have done is take a late flyer on some moderately successful Sun Belt or CUSA coach or something, who STILL would have ditched the Leach Air Raid and been just as big of a gamble as a P5 coordinator, which is what we hired.

There’s no way to sugarcoat this, but we were dealt a really s h i t t y hand, and there are no obvious good options with how to proceed with the offense. Arnett has a challenge that is unlike anything a guy taking over a program has ever faced. We have no choice but to hope he’s up for it.

Or you could stay with an air raid tree coach as OC and keep the staff “mainly” intact, you know ...continuity of the program, since it’s on an upward trajectory and your personnel was recruited for that system.

The system the personnel was recruited for doesn’t exist anymore. It’s literally no longer on this planet.

As for a tweak of the current system, it might be Briles, who utilizes a lot of Air Raid concepts. Or it might be someone else who does the same. It 100% will NOT be anyone who calls and designs plays just like Leach…..so some change is unavoidable.

This is about the 3rd thread I’ve seen you post that we were going to be a 10 win team next year.

We’ve had exactly 3 ten win seasons since we started playing football in 1895. The odds of it happening with any coach next year were almost zero, so please give it a rest and let Arnett run his program the way he sees fit.

there Are many, many branches off of Leachs coaching tree that could step in and provide continuity of the offense. Sure there could be some that run more or use a tight tend, ...as Opposed to a total rebuild that is a completely different direction. Briles is going to need different personnel. That’s going to take 2-3 years even with the portal.

We won nine this year, you bet we were on,pace to win ten next year, with 8 home games and a veteran team returning. I’ll say it again.

the odds of Leach winning one More game next year we’re zero ? LOL

I'll always wonder if coach Leach and Keenum had some private conversations concerning coach Leach's health and the possibility of his retiring during which he recommended Arnett as his replacement. This hiring process was an uncharacteristically smooth for us.

Been reported that Arnett was the person in picked by Leach to be in charge had Leach not been able to coach due to illness this year. It was the contingency plan supposedly.

Yes, there are, and it will still be way different no matter what. Briles, Kittley, Littrell, and Garrett Riley are all from that tree….yet none of them run their offense anywhere close to the same way as Leach. And they aren’t necessarily going to prefer the same assistant coaches that Leach had while he was here, either.

Arnett would have to work hard to find a coach that runs no Air Raid stuff, so you can put this “total rebuild” stuff out of your mind. But there is going to be some rebuild under any scenario. It’s been inevitable for 3 weeks now.

How many of you soggy headed sumbitches screaming about keeping the coaching staff intact at all costs have ever actually worked with other people in high stress environments? Just because a guy worked well for one person, doesn’t mean he works out as well for the new boss. You don’t know what the dynamics were in Leach’s staff. For all we know, Leach kept Arnett from strangling Spurrier every week. That staff worked under Leach, but the power dynamics have shifted. Those transitions aren’t always smooth. For now, I’m gonna trust the guy who is running the ship.

Secondly, can we please stop acting like we were an offensive juggernaut the last three years? Change for our offensive unit is a good thing. Period.

Third, our administration and Zach Arnett were put into a situation unlike anything modern football has ever seen. There was no warning. There was no planning. There was no road map for handling the death of a sitting head coach right before national signing day, before a bowl game and during the portal period. Given the circumstances, I feel like MSU did a hell of a job to honor Mike Leach, keep the team together, and continue to build for the future of Mississippi State football. Those of you who can’t comprehend how difficult this process has been to navigate can 17 right off.

All that said, Hail State and Swing your 17ing swords!

As far as I remember, assistant coaches usually change every off-season on almost every team. Most of the time you see one or two change, unless the coach needs to make drastic changes on his team during the off-season With the overall change in head coach that we have had to make it's obvious we were going to have a change up with our assistants in a more drastic manner. Our assistant coaches themselves might have decided they did not want to be on the new staff or have may or may have received offers to go somewhere else that they wanted.

This was a very different situation than almost all the previous situations for coaching changes made in the off-season, so I'm not upset at all. I'm actually looking forward to seeing what this new staff can do and how they're gonna be put together.

Let's get this out there... If we radically change the scheme the recruiting class doesn't matter and we'd have been better off conducting a national search.... However, I don't think we are radically going to change the scheme. It will evolve but, our QB recruiting already showed we were heading in that direction anyway. Changing coaches on offense doesn't necessarily mean we are Radically Changing the system and I have no problem with changing a few coaches if we believe we're upgrading. I expect to continue with an air raid system but it will evolve to have more of a vertical threat and a little more running threat. Briles, while not my favorite candidate, isn't a bad candidate and he can run that system just fine..

You guys are correct. Yesterday was even worse than normal. And normal has not been setting the world on fire. I am just not a huge fan of change. The reality is it would be easy to improve on our offensive philosophy and also our QB situation. Will showed zero signs of improvement this year, as bad as I hate to admit it. Why would anyone expect him to be better next year. Time to move on
