The athletic article that referenced Howland being let go also said that Sean Miller will probably get the same level of suspension as Pearl did at Auburn. Until I see something otherwise, he has to be at that the top of our list:

1. Sean Miller (Xavier/Arizona) - 302-109 - 11 NCAATs - 7 Sweet 16s/Elite 8s 3x A10 titles 5x PAC titles

2. Matt McMahon (Murray State) - 149-66 - 2 NCAATs (would’ve been 3 but season cancelled with COVID) - 4 OVC titles

3. Chris Jans (NMSU) - 139-41 - 3 NCAATs - 3 WAC titles

4. Drew Valentine (Loyola Chicago) - 20-5 - can’t hurt to follow the Loyola template

5. Dennis Gates (Cleveland State - 49-36 - 2x Horizon champs (2 in a row and 2/3) - 1 NCAAT

6. Todd Golden (San Fran) - 55-34 - rising star and was a Pearl assistant before taking the head gig at USF.

McMahon is an interesting candidate. Some will say his success is solely based from having Ja Morant but he’s 26-2 this season so far.

I don't get too bent out of shape with how many NCAAs a coach from a 1-bid league has, since that bid is 100% dependent on one weekend rather than the course of a season.

Anyhow, I think all of these seem like at least decent hires on paper.

Certainly can’t discount how good the Racers have been this year, but the last Murray State coach that went into a big boy league flamed out fast at Iowa State.

Mark Gotried and mick cronin both coached there and had success after leaving. Even Prohm had some good years in Ames (with Hoibergs recruits) before flaming out

I like McMahon, he's not my #1 pick but he's got Murray State ranked #19 in the country right now and he is the guy that recruited and signed Ja Morrant when nobody else in the country was offering him. He saw that talent way before everyone else couldn't miss it.

I think we need to do some Moneyball kinda strategy here with the next coach. I wanted Tommy Lloyd last year and then Arizona hired him. Now Arizona is #2 in the country in Lloyd's first season. So who did Lloyd bring with him from his Gonzaga days to help Arizona immediately rise? Riccardo Fois. Former Phoenix Suns assistant and former Gonzaga assistant with Lloyd for five years.

We need to recruit outside our immediate base. Gonzaga has signed like 40 international NBA players since Few arrived. Half Arizona's roster is foreign players. Fois is a former Italian national team assistant coach. Also when the Suns were looking for a head coach in 2019 they went ahead and hired Fois as director of player development before they hired Monty Williams as head coach. Says a lot about Fois if they were willing to hire him as an assistant coach before they hired the head coach.

We gotta think outside the box fellas. We have **** attendance, **** recruiting base, **** revenue compared to everyone else in the SEC. Just hiring the current hot mid-major name is probably not going to work as they will just keep on recruiting the same players we've been recruiting the last forever.

Can someone explain all the love for Bob Richey? He's been at Furman a long time and has consistently been a good team in his conference, but nothing outstanding at all. Only one NIT bid and lost in 1st round. No regular season or tournament conference titles, and only 1 second place finish in conference.

This is his 5th year as HC. That’s not a long time.

I don’t like McMahon because his name reminds me of chemistry. Circa fall 1997 and spring 1998

It’s more than long enough to get his players in. And yet, they’re still the same. Good, but not even close to anything special. Nothing that screams out this is the guy for an sec job.

Gregg Marshall should be on the list. Small town politics do exist till proven otherwise as far as I'm concerned with him.

Damn. I'd hate to think hiring him would impact our stellar recruiting.

We get 4 and five stars right now even with Howland. You hire a guy with issues saying racist stuff and let’s see where that gets us. I was on board with hiring Marshall bc I just thought he got fired for pushing a player. Looked more into it and dude was a complete ******* verbally and physically to his players.

Don't look for things you don't wanna find. Marshall could take EMCC's starting roster and do better than Howland.

Howland is a good recruiter

For all the grief you give people on this board for you to just brush off Marshall’s problems is quite hypocritical.

Find a way to get any of the top 3 and we’re in business.

What Prohm did at ISU has nothing to do with how a different coach may do at MSU.
Prohm had a few good seasons at ISU and they sent a bunch of players to the league. He had a few really bad seasons too. Very roller coaster 6 seasons.

Point me to the article/video with Marshall's side of it and I'll watch it.

https://www.kansas.com/sports/college/wichita-state/article246434710.html

“In response to the allegations put forward in the media, I simply state unequivocally that I have never physically struck a player or colleague,” Marshall wrote. “Allegations claiming otherwise are false.”

An internal investigation, led by an outside law firm, resulted in the school deciding they needed to part ways.
Multiple players spoke up and said they were victims or corroborated claims.

Solid??

Class of 22 national ranking 49, SEC rank 9
2021 - 42, 8 (Carter is the only one who has played)
2020 - 39, 9 (Fountain, Garcia, Matthews and two who transferred)
2019 - 60, 13 (Molinar and trash)
2018 - 16, 4 (Perry, Woodard, DJ, Tolu)
2017 - 65, 13 (Nick W, Feazell)

I'm sorry, that's not good recruiting. That's lucking into some guys who had family connections to the program and one (Molinar) who had a connection to an AAU team he is associated with.

But saying we have good recruiting fits your agenda doesn't it?????????? (Did I do that right?)

Let me know what my agenda is for this topic so I can be on the same page as you want me to be.

Your numbers have us at an average of 45th. The numbers you cite are only for 1st time singing. You left out Tolu, Davis, Brooks, and Jeffries. All of them were recruited by the staff.

This is going to be a bad hire because nobody worth a crap wants this job. I'll still predict it's the coach from Furman. His teams jack up 1000 3 pointers a year. Cohen thinks that outside the box and exciting.

Spring of 1995 and Fall of 1996. I remember right before we played Auburn, he played their fight song o. The way out of class. If anybody didn't realize he was a compete douche by that point, they sure did then.

No reason for a SEC school to not average top 30 in recruiting in any sport.

I wouldn't put a hard number on it like that. Auburn was 77th last year and 38th this year.

Who all was part of that #77 class? Smith (best player in sec), Kessler, johnson, and green (transfers don't count for ranking)

If you count transfers for ranking, that is a very good class. My point is there isn’t a reason beyond not having the right coach or lack of recruiting support from the AD to not have top 30 recruiting classes in any sport if you are a SEC school.

You expect the SEC to fill up half of the top 30 rankings, even with thr big12, ACC, and so many consistently strong programs from the other conferences?
That's quite the unrealistic expectation.

Good rundown. Hoping the sanctions on Miller are light and we can make a run at him. Would be a home run for Cohen.
