Are we going to 10 Conference games?

Seems to me, to make the schedule work, they will have to go to 10 conference games per year. That is if they want each team to play each other every two years. Then there would be 5 home and 5 away conference games, with 2 cup cake home nonconference games. We would play 1 away West coast team and 1 home, each season. It might take a few years to get to that schedule and if they add more to the Bigten, then the scheduling sh*t really hits the fan.

Some non season ending "rivalries" will not be played every year (like Mich-MSU), but that is what happens with 18 teams and a 9 game conf schedule.

That would give Fox, CBS, and NBC immediate, major wood. Doubt that it happens as long as the SEC stays at eight.

I’d be quite surprised to see the Big Ten go to 10 conference games. Unless the networks throw a lot of additional money at the conference to do so.

Right now that would put the Big Ten at a distinct disadvantage against the SEC (and ACC) that only plays 8 conference games.

I’d prefer more conference games. With the conference as large as it is (and growing) there’s less and less reason to start the season against teams like Delaware— something which I have always despised.

No disrespect intended to smaller programs, but there’s no reason elite programs should be inflating their records on such games. They’re boring to watch.

Everyone should maybe schedule 1 non-conference opponent for the opener, just to mix things up, and otherwise, play teams within the conference. But non-conference games should be between… us and Florida, for example. Michigan and Miami. Make them real games that will actually draw interest and be meaningful.

Michigan played Bowling Green on Saturday. Did anyone really want that game? Lame.

Good grief man. That's from June before Oregon and Washington were added to the conference. Have you been sleeping?
As has been well documented on this board (and daily proclaimed by my wife), I am, sad to say, an idiot. Apologies.

No apologies necessary and no malice intended on my part and I hope it didn't come across that way - just a friendly jab from one Penn Stater to another.

It depends on what they settle on as "working". With the previous schedule plan, they emphasized that every school would play every other school at least once every 2 years. However, it is not like that is something that "has" to be the case. It's quite possible they will pivot to making sure every team plays at least once every 3 seasons (which was the case under the division/current scheduling setup) now that there are more teams.

I really do not see 10 conference games as a real consideration at this time, not when the SEC only plays 8 conference games. The SEC balked at going to 9 conference games because ESPN would not increase payouts (to get "better" matchups).

The Big Ten will need to weight what is important between protected matchups (like Iowa that has 3 teams locked in) versus more frequent plays. I think they'll likely keep the current 0-3 locked teams and just have teams play at least once every 3 seasons. If that's the case, we might see opponents released for all of 2024/25/26.

Both conferences will end up there with the expanded 16 team playoff in three to four years. It’s pretty obvious this is only about generating revenue at this point for the networks and conferences. The SEC will jump on board as well.

Wait until remuneration relegation is put into play…… NW, you get 25 million next season…..

The conferences will “get there” when the networks are willing to pay for it. ESPN decided they didn’t want to for the SEC at this time. The schools aren’t going to leave money on the table (extra home games, fewer conference losses which means more media attention and better reputation) by adding conference games without an incentive.
