….does Iowa just suck that bad?
As Joepa would say, “you’re never as good as ya think you are when you win; and never as bad as you think you are when you lose.“
Here’s hoping he was wrong.

We're obviously good but we'll have to wait and see if we're playoff good. We struggled to run the ball once again in the first half. We haven't seen evidence that our WRs can get deep. Our punting is average at best and our FG kicker missed one and had one blocked (but wiped out by leaping penalty. But with all that said there are only 4 teams who can beat us and two of them (Rutgers and Maryland) are long shots.

We looked better tonight than we did against Illinois, but it is important to acknowledge that no one has truly tested us, yet.

Give credit where credit is due, and look for us to continue to improve as we march onward toward our Veteran’s Day weekend date with destiny.

Both.
The gap between playoff level teams and... Iowa, is a universe.
A rematch is a high probability. And it will have similar results!
It's like, what's the point.

I think that if it stays healthy, this defense is as good as any in the country…once the first drive is over (lol). Turnovers aren’t gifts, they’re created by opportunity. 11 in 4 games is something we have been clamoring for on here for years. Games like last night will only strengthen their confidence more. Offensively, they did what they could with the conditions. They found Iowa’s weak point and hammered at it, wore them down, and capped it off with a touch pass for a TD. Yes, it would be nice to have the running game shoot out of the gates but there are very little negative-yardage plays unlike when Barkley was in backfield. Yes, o-line could run block even better but I’ll still take almost 4 yds per carry.

Keep on adding building blocks. This is a pretty good team already that is only gonna get better.

Of course anything can happen on any given day, but I watched a little of the MD-UVa game last week. MD is not beating PSU.

We’ll find out soon enough, the big 2 is real as usual. I have confidence we at least split

I agree. We will know how good Penn State really is after they play Ohio State and Michigan.

Forget the split nonsense. Now that Penn State has a real QB, I think they will beat OSU and Michigan.

Drew Allar is the truth!

A good win. Iowa always plays us tough. Lots of good stuff still some growing to do. Surprised our receivers couldn’t get open last week in man coverage and more surprised they couldn’t get open tonight in mostly zone coverage.

Context matters.
Sure Iowa's offense isn't very good, but they hadn't been shutout in 288 games since Oct 2000.
This was textbook complementary football.
And while Iowa's offense isn't great, most would say Iowa's defense IS pretty good... and the offense ground them down and denied them any turnovers. And did it in some pretty poor weather conditions.

Not turning the ball over in 4 games is a big surprise as is the lack of chunk plays. if only we could get better play from the receivers to open things up.

Iowa was the SP+ number 1 defense coming into yesterday. We have some improvements to be made on ST, but overall, think this is a pretty good team we are seeing from our Nits.

With all the talk and focus on explosive plays I have to say it's GREAT seeing Penn State's 4 minute offense click. This, imho, has been a missing component in so many losses where we couldn't keep the defense rested and the opponents offense of the field. In past seasons they seemed to have more negative plays and stalled drives where the focus was chunk plays rather than staying ahead of the chains to have manageable 3rd downs.
It's probably better oline play, Allar's pocket presence and Yurcich settling in. Hard not to get excited about the potential of this team (let alone what the 2024 team looks like).

Never thought I’d see a 17 and 15 play (not to mention a 12 and 10 play) scoring drives from a Franklin team.

i think you hit the issues. I think the reason we have run issues is the DEF is playing a strategy that our QB is not a run threat and we do not have a downfield passing game. whether that is WR's are not a threat or we are not even trying, but either way the DEF does not respect the QB run or the deep pass. That puts a lot of bodies near the line. OL is blocking 7-8 people all the time.

Our ST's are good in some areas (KO), and okay in others PR, KR and FG. Punt is very much below avg and would be a weakness in a field position game where the opponent has an OFF that can move the ball some. I know we recruited a 5* punter a few years ago, but he must not have worked out. Current punt game will lose field position in a tight game.

Turnover margin is beyond real. 4 games of not losing a TO - have we ever done that. Can we depend on that continuing? In a game where TO's are not a factor would be more of a test

pre and post snap penalties have impacted drives so would be good to get that cleaned up.

Love 15, I do, but how’d he do at 11am v illini? He’s growing fast but I’m asking split this year, sweep next. Guys gonna sign a record nfl contract in 6-7 years. He’s super young, a split would be wonderful

Losing to Ohio State or Michigan is never wonderful. A split would be a setback for coach Franklin. He is 4-14 against Ohio State and Michigan. At some point, you have to stop making excuses and saying wait till next year to get them.

This year is the year. Allar is a generational talent right now and will prove it the remainder of his career.

12-0 every year or we’re a failure (according to some on here).
That’s so ridiculous wtf is wrong with you? Let’s once and for all clearly identify the hopes of each side. One side (mine) we‘ll call “contenders” and your side we”ll call “homers”. To be fair, please rename your side and I’ll identify you as such going forward.
so, with a full heart for STATE (and money where my mouth is 350k cash out of state tuition for 1&2) I’ll ID what I hope for:
-every three years I want to go to INDY
-every three years I wanna sweep the big 2
-every 2 years I wanna split with the big 2
I want a program with honor 100% and that’s easy cause that’s who we are.
Selfishly I want an important mid October game every season out west cause we can party with son1. So “Homers” with blue shades, wtaf do YOU want? It’s high time you tell me.

I want to be competitive every year. I want to win more than we lose. I also realize what I want really doesn’t matter. It’s a game and I enjoy watching the games. I would say our side should be called the realists who have a much more realistic memory of where this program has been for the last 30 years.
