Chris Johnson is the sixth NFL player to rush for more than 2,000 yards.

But how would he fare on a running track, without a helmet and pads, against the world's fastest man?

We just might find out.

Sources close to the situation told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that representatives for the Titans running back and Olympic champion Usain Bolt of Jamaica have spent recent days trying to set up a race between the two men to determine who really is the world's fastest human.

The race would be used to raise money for charity.

Bolt won three gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, setting world records in the 100 meters and 200 meters and sharing a third world record with the Jamaican 4x100 meter relay team. At last year's world championships, he shattered both of his own sprinting records, running the 100 meters in 9.58 seconds and the 200 meters in 19.19 seconds.

Johnson on Sunday became the NFL's sixth 2,000-yard rusher when he completed his season with 2,006, breaking Earl Campbell's franchise record of 1,934. The second-year back from East Carolina also broke Marshall Faulk's NFL single-season record with 2,254 total yards from scrimmage.

According to sources, the one hangup seems to be the length of the race. Johnson wants the race to be 60 yards or less, while Bolt would like it to be longer.

Johnson's longest run from scrimmage this season was a 91-yard touchdown run in Week 2.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter contributed to this report.

I think CJ gets waxed if it is anything past 50yds, but who knows.

I can't imagine that Johnson has the mechanics of the start down as good as Bolt does.

I don't disagree with everyone, my first inclination is that Bolt destroys CJ. However, I am glad they are trying to set it up. It makes for good tv.

I will say that in the races I have seen, Bolt's start isn't the nuts. It is when that guy gets all the way upright that's scary. He looks like all the other world-class sprinters to me of the blocks, but when he gets up...see ya.

I am also confident that CJ has run one or two sprints in his life - I know there are very technical aspects to it, but getting off the blocks is not rocket science.

I think they should run two sprints - a 40 yd dash and a 100. For the record, I think Bolt would win both, but I think CJ would be really close in the 40.

was that on turf and in cleats? he may be even faster on a track.

i think they should run each person's race once. first, run a 100 on the track. then, put on football cleats on turf and run a 40.

http://speedendurance.com/2009/08/06/40-yard-dash-times-for-usain-bolt-and-ben-johnson/

Good article. Projects Bolt's 40 time with and without "Reaction Time" factored in. At the combine, the coaches just start the clock when the player starts running. As you know, with sprinters, they go when they hear the gun. As another poster pointed out, the ability to move your *** when that gun goes off is a huge factor.

That article projects Bolt at a 4.22 w/o Reaction Time, which is most comparable to Johnson's 4.24 at the '08 combine. Very close.

I agree with lawdawg that the only fair way to do it would be to run 2 races. Again, it will be fun to watch regardless.

on any race under 60 yards.

Watching Bolt... he doesn't turn it on until he gets upright... which is probably around the 30 or 40 yard mark.

I'll take Johnson on anything under 60 and Bolt on anything over 60.

2 on a track 40 yds or meters and 100 yds or meters

2 on a football field 40 yrds or meters and 100 yds or meters in football gear.

he came in second to Walter Dix in a high school competition. To say he wouldn't know how to run a track race is a farce. He simply chose football over track. He's run a 10.38 before, which is pretty good for a high schooler. That said, Bolt would ruin him past 60 yards.

The Olympians get to start from the blocks, fingers on the ground and both feet planted. The NFL players start standing up and leaning a little. How would the possible race between them start? Blocks or standing start?

Al Davis will proably try to sign bolt after the race to the largest contract in nfl history knowning the raiders. That man cares more about speed then anything. Great first round pick this year.

NFL players get in a sprinter's stance for the combines. They just don't have blocks. Here is video:

Combines

So the start really isn't all that different. The difference for a sprinter is that they reach top end speed and stay there for longer. In a 40, if you run it right, you won't get completely straight up until at least halfway through the run.

Bolt trains for things like this. I think if he solely trained for the 40 yard dash you would see a big difference in his acceleration and technique.

I saw I guy who ran track at state, Steve Mullings who won the SEC championship in 2005 in the 100 meters, run a 4.2 with my own eyes and didn't use blocks. He only ran 10.06 and won the Championship. If Bolt wanted to run a 4.0 he could do it, and will if they run this race out of blocks.

(BTW) Mullings is now on the Jamaican 4X100 nation team with Bolt that won the world championship this past year. Not bad for a MSU grad.

very good point - and a definite plus for bolt, as that's what he does for a living.

i wish they would do the 2 race idea, but i don't see it happening. honestly, i am amazed that they're actually looking at doing this. after michael johnson's "injury" in the 150 race against whoever that guy was, i wouldn't see why bolt would want to do this.

i would also like to see a third race. we'll call it the 28 toss sweep race. vince young will toss a football to each racer from the near hashmark. there will be two obstacles for each racer: the out of bounds line and patrick willis.

i really just hope the race actually happens. i remember the 1-on-1 pay-per-view game that shaq and hakeem were supposedly going to play one year. i really wanted to see it - hakeem would've OWNED shaq.
