Threw too hard for us to hit off of in practice. Was frustating the other players. Got to protect their fragile self esteem. Really, I didnt know we were having a tryout!

Sucks for Hardy. The other 2 had to see it coming.. Hardy actually started some. Why are they cutting now? Shouldn't they let the new coach decide that?

All right, I'm going to make an educated guess based on stats and observations.

Drew Hollinghead
Johnny Allen
Scott DeLoach
Cade Hoggard
Will Coggin
Ryan Rubino
Paxton Pace
Jared Wesson
Sean Johnson

We need all the pitching we can get, so they all probably have a longer leash than some players. Hollinghead and Wesson just haven't been able to get it done against SEC competition, and probably never will. Was debating Koon, but he had better numbers than Wesson.

Pace is hurt, I would tell him to go to Meridian and rehab and then come back.

I was debating Hardy because we have a glut of OF's. Collins, Hogue, Nappi, Flagg, Luke Adkins who was a good player at USM and will eligible next year, Goforth, and then Brownlee who we RS. So Hardy and maybe someone like Flagg or Brownlee could fall prey to numbers even though he is a pretty decent player.

I also had a hard time choosing between Brooks Lewis and Johnny Allen. I just like Brooks Lewis better.

Never heard of him. I could see hanging onto Johnny Allen and maybe even Coggin. With the limited infielders we are already dealing with Coggin could help with depth especially the way our training staff likes their "job security".

If these players were cut then why were all of them sent somewhere by MSU to play Summer Ball......Gene had a story about the different players and which leageues they were playing in this summer

Seems to me if a player was cut, MSU would not place them in a summer league

MSU doesn't necessarily send these players out. Sometimes the players have connections of their own to get on summer ball teams. The coaches may have to sign some paper work or send it through NCAA compliance but that's not hard.

The cuts are not a done deal. If Raffo returns he's indicated to a few players what he plans to do with them ie cut scholarships, promised a few guys walk-on spots, moving guys to different positions. A problem arises for these players with the new rules come into effect next year. Beginning next year there will only be 30 scholarship players on the roster and 5 walk on spots. Coach Polk had promised 4 walk-ons spots for next year to guys already on the team and said that this year would determine what will happen to the fith spot. However there is a wild-card in that Polk had also made that spot available to Rashun Dixon. So if Raffo cuts someone's scholarship they may or may not be promised one of the walk-on spots. After the meetings I believe it left 8 or 9 current players all trying for 1 walk-on spot which may or may not go to Dixon.

However the majority of the draft eligible players on the team are actively trying to sign professional contracts. This could mean that half the players he says will not be on scholarship next year may still get those scholarships depending on the draft and free agent signings.

If Raffo isn't the next head coach all of this might be irrelevant.

Once again, the truth continues to spill his ********. Noone has of yet has been cut from the team. everyone involved with the team is in standby mode until Greg makes his decision. I just got done talking with someone involved with the team, and they said there was no truth to anyone being cut. Yes cuts will have to be made, as every other team in america will. but no decisions have been made.

The guys that were told their scholarships will be cut are going about their business operating under the assumption that their scholarships have been cut, so in that sense the truth is right.

It is business as usual at MSU until a new coach is hired

Yes, MSU will have to trim 9 or 10 players to get back under the NCAA-mandated roster of 35 players for next season.....but of course, none of this has happened yet

it happens every year at the end of baseball season

well thank you Rod Dedeaux...but when the coach retires, there is no one to cut them. And schools dont necessarily align players with teams, there are other ways to get on summer teams as well.

Several SEC coaches will be doing double duty - between coaching and going back to school

What do you coach coach34?

Summer contracts are generally signed and rosters are put together for the good summer leagues early in the fall.

The scholarship renewal or withdrawal letters must be sent out soon, and coach Polk is still sitting as the head coach until someone else is hired. Raffo, who has taken the helm in many ways, may send out the letters before the decision is made about who is the next coach is. They are actively recruiting junior college players at the Juco World Series right now to take the scholarships from the players who just had their scholarships cut.

Yet another option is they cut scholarships from returning players and send out retraction letters soon. Then bring in junior college players for next year regardless of who the next coach is.

1. Retired football and baseball coach
2. But not ALL leagues
3. Actually, Coach Polk is no longer the coach when his resignation said he was stepping down. If he said "end of the season", he's already done. If he said "at the end of this year's contract", then its June 30th. And yes, since Polk is retiring, its normal for the top asst to take over the regular duties until another head coach is in place.
