Was having a similar conversation with my 8 year old, but then he pivoted and said he was sort of soured on college sports. Said Title IX was a well intentioned law that had been butchered by the courts and an unaccountable bureaucracy and that it's been a travesty that sports with passionate fans like baseball and wrestling have been so negatively impacted. Then he went into a discussion about males with body dysmorphia disorders playing in women's sports and said it was so ridiculous because even if you grant to the trans activists that there is a difference between sex and gender, we have segregated sports based on sex, not gender, because sex is what is relevant to differences in physiology and the reason that separate mens and women's divisions are needed. After hearing him parrot back my opinions to me, I felt like they were profound enough that I hurried to the keyboard to share with you this wisdom from the mouth of babes.
Um i didn’t share those opinions that he had and he didn’t parrot mine back to me - we had quite the disagreement actually then actually talked about how the real world works

so you typed out your dissertation for nothing

My 13 yr old was ready to fire everybody last year - his comment was something like: you don’t win a NC one year and go to last place the next

I explained that a step back was inevitable given the recent success - he fired back that he understood that but last place and no postseason is unacceptable at MSU

he then asked a philosophical question about money - said Lemonis earned the salary after winning the NC and did I think after finishing last should it return to pre NC salary
Does he know about the '96 Final 4 Team? They went 26-8 and to the semi finals of National Champ Tourney.

The next 4 years they were 1 game under .500 (61-62) I was expecting some kind of recruiting bonanza after '96 but we fell into the doldrums instead, thanks Injuns...........

'96-'97 they were 12-18, 1 & done in SEC tournament
'97-'98 15-15, 1 & done " "
'98-'99 20-13 2-1 in " " 1 & done in NIT
'99-'00 14-16 1 & done " "

He's not wrong. It's really embarrassing that this was the SECOND time we've gone from the CWS finals to last place in the last decade.

That's not true. In 2014 we made a regional (eliminated by Louisianna Lafaytette if I'm not mistaken). We were in last place in 2015 and then won the league in 2016.

Do you not think a 13 yr old can form their own thoughts and opinions?

if there is one thing he understands, it’s meritocracy, he knows if he doesn’t perform at the plate or mound he gets demoted or moved down in lineup - he tends to equate most things to that

Hell I have great conversations with my 11 yr old too - but I guess he’s just parroting me when he says he wants to be a urologist (I’m an engineer btw) to help kids like his urologist helps him…and then can carry on about all the things they do in great detail

Is this info based on actual in person observation or on hearsay?

Its based on stats primarily. And while I understand it’s a zero sum game, that doesn’t really explain the walks at a minimum. Maybe Lem had them calling it super tight.

Couldn't have possibly been working on different pitches and pitching differently than they will in real game situations. That never happens in a scrimmage.

Maybe so. I sure hope so. But I wouldn’t expect much tinkering just a week or two before the season. Would completely expect it in the fall.

I’m just tellling yall at the highest level what has happened in the scrimmages. I’m not projecting the season.

The pitching staff is essentially Cade Smith, KC Hunt, Pico Kohn, Parker Stinnett (who struggled) and a bunch of dudes who weren’t on the team last year. Auger and Simmons won’t be close to ready. The pitching staff has to sink or swim with the transfer portal guys and the incoming recruits.

We have enough to form a decent starting rotation just with Smith / Hunt / Gartman / Kohn. The problem is the pen. If the hit rate on pitchers is similar to last year’s signees, it could be a long year. Need 4-5 arms to step up from the newcomers. Nixon, Holcombe, Dohm, Loftin, and Tyler Davis are going to likely be the ones to get the first shot to show what they have. The good news is that 3 of those 5 are proven at a fairly high level already. Any other freshmen or JUCOs that exceed expectations and carve out a role would be a bonus.

I did not watch so I'm not saying what they were doing but in a scrimmage. However, I could see a coach working/calling certain pitches more frequently that a pitcher might be struggling with. Like a rh pitcher throwing a slider to left handed batter or a inside two seam fb to a rh batter or change-up in other situations. I doubt they were calling the dominate stuff as regularly as they will during the season.

no, but if the shoe fits

the kid despises mediocrity - I won’t temper that trait - it pushes him to work his *** off to pursue his dream - to play college baseball at the highest level

will he? I don’t know, but I don’t know many 13 year olds that pack their meals each night for school and are up at 4am each morning to go lift before school and then want to work on other stuff after his team stuff is over at night
I do too but we are FAR from mediocrity. Lemonis took us to omaha twice and won our first NC. The kind of immature take that your kid has where you fire everybody or take away salary after a bad year would not result in mediocrity but permanent suckocrity. But what do you expect, he is just a kid. You should be setting him straight instead of humoring that nonsense.

I think my 13 year old was right - it’s worse than mediocrity

we watched the game yesterday while traveling to his school ball game - it was 6-1 when we got to field

on our way home, he asked “who would be a good bench team to watch?”

Congrats on having a son that’s not a robot and thinks for himself. As long as he does and trusts his intuition he’s gonna be very good at whatever he does in life. We’ve got way too many relying on groupthink that has no idea how the real world works. Fortunately, it’s all about to be laid out for them real soon, and many will wake up for the first time in their life! Congrats dad, you’ve seemingly done a fantastic job. Now get him to Starkville ASAP, our baseball program needs some help!
