…..are we looking at as good of a season as I think we are? I am a tad worried about the inside players but Murphy and Matthews make me optimistic.

I think we have a Sweet 16 team. But I know little about basketball. Just not my forte (no jokes please).

If we have a lot of guards, then we should be pressing like the “40 minutes of hell” Nolan Richardson teams.

We may not, the way it’s played nowadays. I don’t really know. Basketball was that sport that I just simply enjoyed when I was a kid (90s) without getting too deep in it.

I think we’ll be decent but not sure what to expect down low. Schedule looks like the classic Mississippi State schedule of the last ten years with a better non conference slate than usual. Probably lose 2-3 non conference. Enter SEC play, win 1-2, then hit murderers row. We’ll have a losing SEC record halfway through conference play. Everyone here will freak out. Our schedule will get easier, and we’ll win games and get into the tournament in the 7-11 range. Would love to be better than that, but this is what I’m expecting

It's Mississippi State so I have high expectations. But seriously folks. We do have 3 big centers. Plus Jones who can play center with a small lineup. Sounds like Jans is optimistic but you know how it goes. Can't be as bad as football.

It’s a complete flip from the last couple of years and they will have to rely on perimeter play to get it done. The 5 is a complete unknown at this point. Rebounding is going to potentially be a struggle and that might limit the wins for this team.

You left out the part about fans "freaking out" about lack of attendance in December and January, the complaining about not having students seated in a particular place, and the lack of parking.

So too many point guards in basketball in no way the same as too many receivers in football. Nothing to see here.

Our style of play offensively is going to change dramatically, we’re transitioning to the style Bama plays. We have a lot of shooters, like real shooters. Our January schedule is brutal, get to February .500 or better and we have a chance at a special season.

I think we have a deeper team than normal but also I wouldn't get overly excited about them. Our inside game will still be MSU related. We go as far as the guards shooting percentage goes. I feel like we will get beat up a little bit inside, but luckily for us, there aren't that many centers that can consistently score anymore.

Our man to man defense will struggle with the newcomers to the program getting minutes but will improve as the year goes along or they won't get the playing time they expect. It will definitely be an interesting year like a Six Flags roller coaster ride.

Sweet 16 team... nah. Tournament team yes. But once you get into the tournament anything can happen. But this isnt a sweet 16 team talent wise.

We have one player selected to the pre-season ALL SEC team and are picked to finish 10th in the league. Which I think is a little low. I would probably but us 6-7 ish... regardless a tier 2 type team in the SEC this year... But even then, thats not sweet 16 worthy.

We should have beefed up the non-conference schedule a little more. Our SEC schedule is very favorable.

You win with guards. As long as Cam doesn’t try to work on his outside game we will be fine. I think we are going to miss DJ Jeffries defense.
Big time. DJ always got a lot of crap for his shooting, but on the defensive side, he was dang near a unicorn. He could guard 4, and at times, 5 positions on the court which is just an uncanny mix of size and agility.

Also, when it came to his shooting, I got as frustrated as anyone with it. However, I think a lot of my frustration wasn’t as much about him as it was having 3-4 guys on the court at the same time that were no good from outside of 10 ft

Didnt you just claim to not have much knowledge and also say we have a lot of guards. Matthews is great but hes not really a post players so we only have Murphy who seems to have talent but hasn't done a ton.

I think we will be good too, but do you always do this? Yes. Nevermind the answer is yes!

Did I 17 your wife or something? I realize I was pretty hammered last time I was in Starkville, but she wouldn't leave me alone man. I can't really remember it.

So back to basketball....it does always seem like we're missing one piece....guess that piece this year is DJ.

Entire season will basically boil down to are Clary and Harris major impacts out of the portal. If both are, we have a chance to be a good team. If only one is, we'll likely end up a lot like last year bubble team trying to get in, if they are both struggle to adjust to the SEC.. book your NIT tickets.

Our problem is going to be starting 5-10, 6-0, 6-4... lot of the better teams will have a monterous size advantage on us.

Perimeter defense is a big concern, at least in my eyes. Our starting 1 and 2 are both right at 6'. Not much length out there. Gotta hope Melendez, Kugel, or Jones can fill the defensive void that Jeffries left.

Not as much as we will accept his missed three pointers.
We will miss DJ Jeffries perimeter defense less than we will accept his missed three pointers?

...is that not a fully formed thought or am I totally misunderstanding what you posted?

Huge concern. Hubbard was a major liability defensively last season.

Would make sense to Bring Jones off the bench and start with some size.. but I guess we'll figure that out as the season goes.

I'm kinda excited to watch this team play with all the new pieces.

But, I don't have any idea what to expect results wise. I'd tend toward thinking we'll struggle more than we'll be a Sweet Sixteen team, but we'll see.
