Be honest... who here has seen Barbie Movie, and if so, thoughts?

My lib son and his wife thought it was great. When my daughter-in-law casually mentioned that there was a social message in the movie it validated my decision not to see it. I knew exactly what that meant.

it’s frustrating trying to figure out some of these posts. What does “social message”mean? I love the dialog but I don’t understand what is upsetting some posters with this movie.

Saw Oppenheimer, but couldn’t convince my work buddies of the merit of the double feature. I’ll see it when it streams.

Kudos to you for going in with an open mind. This is the same crowd who are happy their women’s national team lost.

Yet the person you are complimenting is among those who is glad the USWNT lost. You don’t have to always lump everyone who disagrees with you together in a box.

I graduated in ‘69. My wife of 50 years and I went to see Barbie. It was fun.
It was a happening! There were several generations together. They were all dressed in pink. Some were in wheelchairs. Others used walkers.

Barbie was not as good as Oppenheimer, but, Oppenheimer was not a happening.

Changing the subject to the Women’s Soccer Team, their loss was to a team from a socialist country. Just saying.
But at least that team was proud of their own country. And they would have much more of a case to make a poltical statement (see WW2).

Hold on... I disliked the USWNT because they clearly hold their own country openly in contempt. As someone who has actually been shot at in the defense of The Republic I find that attitude contemptable. I am not sure how that connects in any way to keeping an open mind/opinion about the message Barbie movie was trying to convey. I am often described as being to the right of Attila the Hun politically, but I would not quickly dismiss this movie. It actually has some positive messages (IMHO), but it also tries to subtly sneak some hyper progressive messages on the viewer as well. Hell, have you seen the new Justified season? Clearly it has undergone a "woke" make over. It takes away from what made it great but I am still enjoying it.

Right, I wasn't judging your reasons for being glad they lost, I shared them. @Midnighter was trying to mock the Barbie-haters by lumping them in with the USWNT haters (as though neither have independently valid justifications, so only loons who hate both must exist). But the very person he was responding to (you), contradicted that. I haven't seen Barbie yet, so I don't have an opinion, but I'm guessing I'll fall into the same category (glad USWNT lost, fine with Barbie).

There is a lot of overlap despite ESRC’s outlying opinion on Barbie.

You were doing so well with the positive Barbie review! Ah well….we’re both military men but have wildly different views on what is acceptable for people to express regarding their experiences in this country.

Have been enjoying a very strong military community in Hawaii these past couple weeks too; maybe the most pro military state in the country. It’s basically one big military base…

I’d like to go on record as also hating the girls national soccer team. (And Barbie)

I never sang the anthem in the morning or at night while in uniform on base during colors......but some girls on a team not singing 3 minutes before they are kicking off a match is the last straw. Grrrrr...it's funny watching people getting manipulated into being triggered and then cry about woke folks in the next minute. It goes right over their heads. LOL, new laws coming...women and anyone in uniform at any sporting even has to sing as it may offend someone!!! The land of the free....sing or we'll pout about it as we want to pretend to be outraged.

My daughter dragged her boyfriend to the movie and they seemed to think it was ok, nothing earth shattering. Margot Robbie is a nice draw, but I just assumed I can catch this one later.

Seems like a movie that was designed to rile up the fringes and keep people talking about it and in the press. It has been successful at doing it.

Why do they "HAVE to SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM"? Stand up and respect the American Flag for 30 seconds and sit your loser butts down and lose in the finals

I’ll watch it when it is free on premium cable. I like chick flicks as much as any man, but don’t need to pay to see them in a theater.

Yes you are right it was a nothing that every other team showed pride in their while ours did not. That is not how it works. How much love are you expecting for a group that purposely disrespects the country? Actions cause reactions. Maybe you should sing the anthem once in awhile and perhaps realize how lucky you are to live in this country.

And here you are spending time talking about the movie on a PSU football board.

Without seeing the movie, I can say with certainty that there is one good thing about it: Margot Robbie.

FWIW - an interview with a Veteran (Green Beret) who, via dialog with Kaepernick, helped convince him to kneel (instead of sit) during the anthem. No sides taken…just discussion.

Some poignant words from this Veteran:
And I just learned to understand that I'm not going to agree with everybody. Everybody doesn't have to agree with me. And I don't have to be right all the time. It's OK because what is right? Like, we don't really even know what's right and wrong. We're just making guesses and assumptions, and we're hoping a lot of the time. And so it was through that time over there that I think it better informed me on how to live back here and how to just respect the man on my left and right, or woman on my left and right as well. Because, at the end of the day, you know, yes, we're very different in very many ways, but we're so much more similar than we are different.

I searched for any existing thread and found none. Kind of surprised it hasn't garnered more discussion.

Wife finally dragged me to see it this past weekend. Have to admit, was really good. First off, there is no other woman on the face of the planet like Margot Robbie. Holy shiit does she look amazing in this. Underlying message was actually deep and thought provoking. Mattel certainly makes themselves the butt of a lot of the humor. Ryan Gosling is also tremendous. It can get a little too preachy with its wokeness at times, but an excellent movie.

And to make sure there are no flags on the field...

Saw it. It's great. If you're a conservative, you'll hate it.

I always got the impression that your day schedule involved drinking, boating, driving fast cars, and attending concerts (and all possible combinations) and nothing else. ;)
Played 18 before the rain, heading to Walmart and beer store, 2 is coming home for 4 days and he wants Mac and cheese and fried chix for dinn so I gotta get the ingredients and get to cooking. Tonite we break bread, drink lites and watch nfl/phillies
also getting a tub of brusters
speaking of fast cars, I think 2 and I are swapping the TT for the GTI this weekend the manual is killing him on the surekill 76

My wife and I saw the movie. She is a big Barbie fan and somewhat of a collector, so of course, she liked the movie. I thought it was very entertaining. I really had no idea what to expect, but I left the theater thinking it was really good.

I think if you are a certain type of "conservative" you wouldn't like it (thin skinned without a sense of humor :) ). However, I am a subscriber to National Review for over 35 years and fancy myself an old school Reagan conservative... and I thought it was a very entertaining movie.

The long speech by America Ferrera was the centerpiece of the movie...

"It is literally impossible to be a woman. You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don't think you're good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we're always doing it wrong.

You have to be thin, but not too thin. And you can never say you want to be thin. You have to say you want to be healthy, but also you have to be thin. You have to have money, but you can't ask for money because that's crass. You have to be a boss, but you can't be mean. You have to lead, but you can't squash other people's ideas. You're supposed to love being a mother, but don't talk about your kids all the damn time. You have to be a career woman but also always be looking out for other people.

You have to answer for men's bad behavior, which is insane, but if you point that out, you're accused of complaining. You're supposed to stay pretty for men, but not so pretty that you tempt them too much or that you threaten other women because you're supposed to be a part of the sisterhood.

But always stand out and always be grateful. But never forget that the system is rigged. So find a way to acknowledge that but also always be grateful.

You have to never get old, never be rude, never show off, never be selfish, never fall down, never fail, never show fear, never get out of line. It's too hard! It's too contradictory and nobody gives you a medal or says thank you! And it turns out in fact that not only are you doing everything wrong, but also everything is your fault.

I'm just so tired of watching myself and every single other woman tie herself into knots so that people will like us. And if all of that is also true for a doll just representing women, then I don't even know."
