Belichick hire - a Positive or a Negative for UNC

It's a definite positive. It's the most ballyhooed collegiate athletic hiring of all time. Nothing I've ever seen even comes close.

Everything on this earth is temporary. Nothing that comes next detracts from now. Period. End of statement. Amen.
Hmmm, can't tell if you're being sarcastic, haha.

I think you take Deion's hiring at Colorado and multiply that hype/hoopla by at least a factor of 10. Maybe 20. Deion was at least already a coach at the FCS level and his jump to P5 based on his name recognition had been speculated about. Prior to this week, nobody has ever, even for a fanciful second, speculated about Belichick coaching in college. And why would they? The first thing he does at UNC will be the first thing he's ever done as a college football coach. Has never spent a second on a college football staff.

On top of the bombshell news that the 2nd winningest NFL coach of all time, and the coach with the most Super Bowl was heading to coach college ball at the age of 72, you have the fact that he did not pick a soft landing spot like Alabama or Texas. This coach, widely considered among best ever, picked UNC. Great school notoriety...national and international brand......but not in football. If he took over an established blue blood program you could shrug it off somewhat just an easy semi-retirement gig to boost his image or whatever.

Yeah, Whether this goes down as a great hire or a horrible hire is yet to be determined. It is, for certain, the most stunning collegiate football hire of all time. And, yes, probably college in general. This would be akin to Phil Jackson agreeing to be the coach for the Georgia Bulldogs.

As of today, North Carolina is at the epicenter of the college football world. They have eclipsed the CFP. This might not last, but that doesn't affect today. Today, they are the bomb!

Ehhhh, I'd disagree there. I mean, look at Deion at Colorado. Their recruiting took off big time simply because of his success in the NFL as a player and his promise that he could get players ready for the NFL.

I'm not a Belichick fan and think he only found success due to Tom Brady (which the record backs up). Nevertheless, he's considered by most to be one of the top NFL head coaches of all time.

If Deion could get Colorado's recruiting to take off because of his NFL experience as a player 20+ years ago, I think you can easily extrapolate that to Belichick.
Deion brought his sons and Travis Hunter with him, he did not recruit them to Colorado. Colorado's current recruiting class is ranked 37th so Deion isn't exactly lighting it up in recruiting.

Bama, UGA, Ohio St, LSU and Michigan are the top 5 schools with players in the NFL. I think the coaches at those schools have a legitimate claim for knowing how to get players in the NFL and not one of them is a former NFL coach.

I think the new car smell will wear off quickly...they should enjoy the attention they're getting right now. He's not bringing anything revolutionary to the college game.

Today, and in the months ahead, it doesn't matter. They are enjoying more notoriety right now than they have experienced in more than a century of playing the game - maybe more than the TOTAL notoriety they have experienced over that time.

And if it blows up, well, they will still have had it. And then, there's the possibility that it WON'T blow up, except in the faces of OTHER people.

I think because of his big ego he thinks he’ll come in and turn things around quickly, but the only thing that will tell the story is how deep there NIL pockets are, in a few years the shine will wear off. He might not be able to concentrate on football worrying what his young wife is doing hanging around all those young kids on campus. Lol

''UNC’s program desperately needs a long-term infusion of energy. Not the kind of quick burst you get from downing a can of Red Bull.

The Tar Heels tried that by bringing Mack Brown out of retirement 6 years ago and it worked for a while.

But it didn’t end well. Hiring Belichick wouldn’t, either.

It would only be a matter of time before the cantankerous coach gets tired of dealing with 18-year-olds, with the media, with athletic administrators and with trips to out-of-the-spotlight places like Winston-Salem and Blacksburg, and decides he’s had enough and walks away.

He could potentially leave a mess even worse than the one Matt Doherty created for UNC’s basketball program back in the early 2000s. And without a Roy Williams waiting in the wings to swoop in and clean things up, it could take years for the Tar Heels to recover.

But at least they’d win the press conference.''

Hiring a legendary coach with a promise of his son to be next head coach never ends well…..Holtz/Holtz and Spurrier/Spurrier.

I don't know. If you're UNC, why not give it a shot? It's a long shot solution, but worst case scenario, it doesn't work out. It's a virtual guarantee any traditional hire they made would not have worked out either.

Belichick's odd buyout certainly is in place to allow for a return to the NFL if the opportunity presents itself, but all indications are the NFL has moved on from Belichick. Perhaps he's at UNC because he knows that. UNC is not a blue blood in football, but they are top 5 college brand, overall. Maybe #1, I dunno.

Not sure if he cares if it works out or not as long as the girl is happy, and the son gets a shot as HCIW.
