Belichick's odd buyout

He has a $10 million buyout...until June 1, 2025, when it drops to $1 million.

A very odd structure to say the least. Buyouts usually drop incrementally, year over year, not 90% over 6 months.

Wouldn't it be something if brought his son in as HCIW then bolted for an NFL job in June? Unlikely there would be any coaching movement in the NFL by that point, but it seems he wants the option.

Well we know, from our own experience with a younger "old" coach, older coaches get negatively recruited against all the time. Seems like something that indicates he wants to jump back to the NFL when possible. But in today's world, players may only stay somewhere a year anyways before they jump to the portal, so it will be interesting.

I agree

We'll have to see how it shakes out. One thing is for certain: he loves coaching football. Any description you read about him as a coach presents him as professorial in his approach. Anyone who has played for him notes that he thrives on teaching the game. Maybe the college game will present him with a fertile ground to do that teaching.

There are 2 main factors behind this move
1 pleasing the young chick
2 nepotism in setting up his son as HCIW

and once that is accomplished who knows what will happen and how quickly.

Those dates and amounts seem to be the perfect set up to announcing his son's hire as HC after this coming season ends. Announce June 2.

If the June 1, 2025 date is correct, wouldn't that be _before_ this coming season begins? I don't know what's going on there, but something is screwy about this whole deal.

The timing for the buyout to drop that much in six months is very odd indeed, but I can’t quite think of why it might be structured that way. It’s almost certain no NFL teams will be looking for coaches at that time. The only thing I can think is that he might want to be available if any NFL coaches are fired midseason.

I don’t know about all this NFL talk. It seems as though the NFL teams have washed their hands of Belichick. No one appears interested in him for various reasons. And, he’s getting older and out of touch. I can buy the notion he may be setting up his son for a coaching job at UNC but even that is suspect. The question is…what does UNC get out of this arrangement?

Edit: To answer my own question regarding the benefit of this arrangement for UNC, maybe it’s that Belichick will become their GM and enact a new NFL style organization.

Holtz didn't even have a buyout. Talk about odd. But maybe that's the price Belichick was willing to pay to get this opportunity.

He wasn't brought in to be a long term coach. He was brought in to put an NFL management system in place. I doubt he'll even mess with the xs and os.
