Fondren is fantastic. The new Fondren develpment that is still under construction will have a new restaurant, a hotel and other nice housing/retail space. Not sure what else you would want.

Compared to other areas in Jackson, it is fantastic. Compared to what it could be, it sucks. There are a few restaurants and Fondren Beverage Emporium, which is awesome. Other than that, there's not much there. It needs some few bars that aren't just more redneck joints like most of the other bars in Jackson and more non-chain restaurants.

but that area has 3 of my favorite places in Jackson

Walkers, Gay Sera Sera (I don't care if it's one of Jackson's gay friendly hang outs - I like the red beans and rice), and Sal and Mookies for overpriced pizza that I don't mind paying for.

prospective business owner. Developers like mike peters simply provide venue. Fondren, however, really has 2 chain/franshises in there. But it also has Schimmel's, Que Sera, Walker's, Brent's, Roosters, Basi's, Sal and Mookies (thanks DS) and the soon to open restuaurant in Dooling School so I think its doing quite well in the short time the rebirth has been underway. Not sure what else you can ask for.

I do think jackson and this state as a whole needs more true bars. Not music venues, not restaurants with a bar but true bars. There are very few.

Besides, poor schools will keep most suburbanites from making the move back to Jackson.

No ****. When I put my two oldest into McLeod Elementary School 2001-2003, it was a fine school, with lots of extracurricular activities for the kids and their parents.

When Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, the wife and I decided to put all our kids back into McLeod because we were trying to sell our house. The quality of education totally deteriorated by then. The principal and teachers were barely teaching the basics at every grade.

We have our kids out in Hinds county schools now, and they're light years ahead of JPS, even though both systems are under the Hinds county School board. Until JPS can get their **** together and the Superintendent can provide strong leadership to improve the schools, many folks are going to stay in southern Hinds county, Rankin County, or Madison county.

I liked what Ben Allen was saying. He was right in that Jackson has the same problems many cities of comparable size have had the past few years. However, until you give knuckleheads like Kenny Stokes the boot, many businesses will be afraid to locate in downtown.

...and probably the state. I am hard pressed to recall a better pizza than what I have had there. Maybe a deep dish I had from Pizzaria Uno once, maybe.

Don't get me wrong, Fondren is my favorite area in Jackson. But if they put more restaurants like the ones you listed, a couple of bars that have beer on tap that besides Bud, Miller, or Coors, and some interesting shops instead of using a lot of the commercial real estate for banks, multiple coffee shops, dry cleaners, etc., it would be a lot better. A small venue for live music that doesn't attract acts like Kiss cover bands and the Bellamy Brothers would also be a plus.

Sal and Mookie's is good but overpriced, but their beer selection is possibly the best in the area. It's the only place I've been able to order a Rogue Dead Guy Ale in Jackson. If they had a few porters on the menu, that would be tremendous.

Rouge Dead Guy is outstanding. I get it on tap at Mellow Mushroom in Flowood, being the suburbanite that I am.

Did anyone eat where Sal and Mookies is when it was known as Jubilee? That place had amazing food.

Pizza Shack does rock, plus they sponsor the Saints.....

I get at Martin's when I do go Downtown. Maritn's has a ton of great beer if you like non mass produced beverages that have a full flavor..........

really?? I know BWW used to have it when i lived there. I should know, i gained about15lbs drinking that stuff during the 2005 NFL season. Martin's should have it and other good beers too. But youre right, places to find micro brews and imports are few and far between in J-Town.

See King Edward Hotel, arent they still working on that? Geez, what a joke.

Harborwalk, no its not Jackson, but another boondoggle none the less.

I live in the Reservoir area and didn't know Mellow Mushroom had Dead Guy on tap. I'll have to start eating there now. Now if only I could find a restaurant serving Rogue Mocha Porter and Brutal Bitter.

On a similar note, if you like craft beer, follow this link to a group trying to get the ban on beer above 5% ABW removed and get involved.

I know Martin's has carried the Shakespear Stout and Yellow Snow. They have several different Rogue beers in the cooler.

So Hal & Mals and Martin's are redneck joints? You might want to check again.

I agree Jackson needs more bars and has a huge advantage over Rankin county when it comes to restaurants because of the liquor laws.
The problem is all the the people who live outside of Jackson that do not want to drive home drunk to get a DUI by Rankin or Madison County's finest.
I say bring it all to Jackson, but I might be biased since I live here.

Shakespeare may be the best beer you can legally buy in Mississippi. As a matter of fact, I didn't know it was legal.

To me it wasn't even close.

Problem with sal and mookie's is that they burn the bottom of the pizza too often, and a large Pep is 20 bucks.

I miss Walker's more than anything else in Jackson now that I am in Mobile.

I would label Hal and Mal's as a redneck bar.
I hate H&M as much as the next guy... but, I'll be damned if I think it's a redneck bar. Pop's Around the Corner? Yeah... THAT'S a redneck bar.

And... one of the reasons I hate H&M so much is b/c they still advertise that they're a brewery. In fact, they haven't brewed since Katrina somehow managed to "knock out" their brewery. I don't buy that excuse and, to me, it shows their lack of dedication to doing that with any degree of competence. Plus, I can't stand having to pay a cover charge just to eat there... I do like their food.

Not necessarily renting vs buying, but the need for more living space - starting with the area around Jackson's largest non-government employer, UMC (which I might add is still a state-supported institution).

doesn't have much space for any living space. Our hospital is improving 10 fold since I got here four years ago. We're starting to get really prestigious programs and are working on becoming a certified stroke center and heart center. We also were recently named one of the top 100 hospitals in the country- and no, it was not a BS thing that we applied for.

My point is, a place like UMC will make Jackson a little more attractive to live in if we have a reputation for good health care. Unfortunately, as far as living space, we're land locked.

I assumed before posting that I'd have people disagreeing with me because my threshold for redneck is pretty low. Whether you think it's a "redneck bar" is beside the point, though. The original point I was trying to make was that there should be a couple of bars in Fondren that differ from all the other bars in town somehow. Most of the bars I've been in have an extremely limited beer selection and are dirty and smoky. To me, that equates to a redneck bar, but that's just semantics.

For those that don't know what the hell that means...
the process of renewal and rebuilding accompanying the influx of middle-class or affluent people into deteriorating areas that often displaces poorer residents

Just because there might be a redneck or two in a bar does not make the bar a redneck bar.
We are talking about Mississippi, not LA or NYC.

If you think Hal & Mals is redneck, don't go to Martin's.

You should try Schimmels, Elixir, & Julep, but they are also restaurants.
Those three might be more your speed..
I guess you keep pennies in your loafers too.

Downtown does have a good many thriving businesses, but there are still too many run down, abandoned buildings. But, with that being said, if the roads were repaved in downtown, and really in all of Northeast Jackson, it would go a long way towards making our city more attractive in my opinion. Road condition, landscaping, and beautification of a downtown area never really occured to me as something that was important until I saw how bad Jackson's roads were.
I think I could become the mayor on the platform of fixing the roads alone.
