Have a friend who coached basketball at Auburn. He asked me to show some boosters a good time when they came north for the Kickoff Classic. I can't remember if it was 1982,3 or 4. Anyway I took them on a tour of West Point and arranged a nice dinner for them. When I took them back to their hotel they insisted that I meet " their boy" Bo. The words made me uncomfortable, but they were in their own way sincere in their love for young Bo.No one knew who Bo Jackson was yet. He was a very nice young man and I've never seen a physical specimen like Bo. He was kind enough to send me 3 or 4 autographed cards that were distributed weekly by the SID during his Heisman year. I was still coaching and on each card was a message congratulating me on a recent win. Pretty cool.

I did not watch football as a youngin, so I can’t say Jim Brown. The first college player I saw that made me sit up and take notice was OJ. Hershel Walker was a beast. Bo was a monster. Defensively, it would have to be LT.

One guy not mentioned that I found constantly entertaining was Randle-El. Obviously not the best but he was a handful; I found myself watching him every play when I saw him live.

Great Story. Bo was one of a kind. The catch he made while running up the outfield wall and then almost parallel to the ground to catch a deep fly was jaw dropping and then him bowling over the Boz on a long TD run was equally jaw dropping.
One of my favorites as well. Also just seemed really likable.

While waiting for Bo, the boosters brought Pat Sullivan over and introduced us. For a high school coach it was a pretty nice day to meet a Heisman winner and a future Heisman winner on the same day.

According to my friend who new him well...he was a fine young man...Who incidentally loved and took care of his Mother. An essentially shy person who overcame a severe handicap (speech).

In person: Never saw Reid in person. Randy White from MD was a beast. Got to see a lot of Curt, so Curt is my answer.

On the tube: Probably LT or maybe Montana.

Love these discussions names come up that I have not heard or thought of for many years. Randy White's DL coach at Maryland was Gib Romaine. Gibby was a Port Jervis, NY grad as well as a player at East Stroudsburg. He was one of my coaches at Mansfield 68-69 before he went on to much bigger things. Whenever I saw him on the recruiting trail or at a coaches clinic, I'd ask him who was the better player....me or White. He'd say that I had a bigger impact on his coaching career because I made him realize there was no future in coaching guys like me at Mansfield.

You know Michael Vick was a lot of fun to watch when he was at Virginia Tech. (not saying he was an all time great)

Just considering players that I have seen in person, John Elway was the best NFL player. As far as college players, I would have to pick Saquon Barkley. But Travis Hunter is currently giving Saquon a run for his money.

Dang I haven't heard Port Jervis mentioned in a long time! Lived not far from there and worked a couple HS jobs there. Can't recall them having a good football team but just checking it appears they are VERY good. Destroyed the like of Middletown. If I recall I think we had a pretty decent O Lineman from Minisink Valley. Can't remember his name but he was big into hunting and fishing I know.

I never coached a game against Vig. He was the gold standard in this part of NY. However, we drew PJ in our post season the year after he retired. We were fortunate to best them by 3 scores and completed an undefeated season for us. It may have been my most satisfying coaching victory. PJ fell on hard times after Bob Corvino retired. But they are back the past 3 or 4 years.

Duffy Cobbs. No one ever threw on his side.

Hines Ward. Multi-position player at Georgia and then a tough-as-nails talented receiver with the Steelers.

He may not be the ‘best’ but Antwan Randle-El at IU was a hell of a player. Fun to watch even when he played PSU

Courtney Brown. There's a reason he was taken before LaVar in the draft.

Larry Johnson should get a mention. I saw him brining the lumber against Michigan State while Charles Rodgers was alligator arms'ing passes because he was counting his signing bonus and couldn't be bothered.

One guy who caught lightning in a bottle that you couldn’t wait to see what he pulled out of his a$$ every week was Johnny Football. Now that was some fun.

But I went back and gave it some more thought to answer the OP‘s question properly. Offensively for me it was OJ both in college and pros. He and Gale Sayers were the first two guys I saw where their speed literally jumped through the TV. OJ‘s 2k season still was the most memorable individual season I ever saw.

Defense, it’s easier. LT. I really don’t remember seeing him much in college, but holy hell was unleashed in the NFL. The Fearsome Foursome, Purple People Eaters, and Steel Curtain were each memorable (and what amazing names), but LT was another level. I actually felt bad for the opposing QB. Fear is the only word to describe it.

Never saw him play football live, but his highlights remain legendary. I did see him play baseball in person, and he did not disappoint. And of course he was untouchable on Tecmo Bowl!! Best football player I’ve seen live was either Peyton Manning or Lavar Arrington.

I can tell you in cut off tee shirt and gym shorts he was the most impressive specimen I've ever seen. The human equivalent of a racehorse.
