Being that it is early in the off-season I thought we can discuss/rank the best jobs in College Football, meaning the place where you could bring in the best players to compete at the highest level. Factor in location, history, facilities, commitment, etc…

Mine is,

1. Georgia
2. LSU
3. Alabama
4. Ohio St (pains the **** out of me to write this)
5. Texas
6. USC
7. Tennessee
8. Miami (if they could put a fence around Dade)
9. Florida
10. Oklahoma

Underrated one, Houston. Now that it is in a P5 Conference, with the right coach and commitment in that recruiting area it can definitely become a power in the B12.

Another day, we can discuss/rank the worst jobs in the Power 5.

Thoughts?

LSU #1 IMO but mostly agree.

PSU #1 just because. Also, despite our high standards here, there is less pressure to win at PSU compared to a lot of places. PSU has a good balance and emphasizes more than just winning.

I hate us.

Miami? You ever see that stadium when they are mediocre or worse? It’s empty. No stadium on campus and every other program in the country is invading your recruiting territory. On top of that, every one expects the resurrection of the 80’s and 90’s success. That job seems very challenging to me.

Clemson belongs in the top 5 or 6. Don't Miami's facilities rank lower than IMG Academy's?

If Miami can keep most of the talent in and around Broward and Dade, that place can get rocking real fast. And if they decide to build an on campus stadium with the above scenario, that would be a Top 5 job IMO.

You're forgetting Notre Dame, where the fan base is obnoxious, but the women of South Bend are your Handmaid's Tale fantasy on steroids, and Rudy deserves to be immortalized on Mount Rushmore, because the selfless schedule includes the Service Academies who actually have zero players who will play in the NFL, and Touchdown Jesus!

Missing TAMU. They have loaded boosters, good facilities, fertile recruiting territory, play in a top conference that brings in tons of money for the program.

The rest can at least make a reasoned argument - but Miami?
No money (relative to the big boys)
No facilities (relative to the big boys)
No fan support
EVERYONE recruits their backyard.

Kirk Herbstreit has the best job in college football. He gets to see all the games, all the coaches and players are happy to talk to him, he loves the sport, and he doesn't have a ton of boosters hectoring him to win a national championship.

Hard to understand why you omitted Notre Dame.

Here is my top 10:

1. Penn State
2. Notre Dame
3. Ohio State
4. Oklahoma
5. Alabama
6. USC
7. Michigan
8. Florida State
9. Miami
10. Georgia

Notre Dame is maybe the most prestigious, but not the most suited to success in the modern era. No football player specific dorms, no special dining rooms, etc. Football players, for better or worse, are treated like regular students. That’s why Kelly left for IMO the best job (easiest to win a NC) in college football. Plus the outrageous salary.

Back then:
TV money wasn't driving revenue streams (Hello - B10 and SEC and a bunch of poor folks)
They played in the Orange Bowl (not on-campus, but in the neighborhood)
The rest of the college football powers hadn't set up branch offices to recruit SFLA (back then TEX, CAL, PA/OHIO/NJ, and the "swath across thew south" were the prime recruiting territories - moreso than SFLA)
No one was building athletic Taj Mahals

Schell and Johnson thrived in a time when you could be financially powerful as an independent (not any more)
They caught the front wave of "SFLA producing a ton of D1 kids", before that became a thing
They weren't a "renter / commuter" program (even worse than Pitt is now)

No one in SFLA cares about the Hurricanes, and they would have to have all the stars align, catch lightning in a bottle, and even then any real success would likely be short-lived... IMO. But who knows what the future may hold.

My memory may be sketchy but didn’t Notre Dame make the CFP one year under Kelly?

It is interesting that all the things you mentioned as being negatives were once strongly emphasized by Joe Paterno as being positives for Penn State.

Pretty sure Kelly made the CFP twice at ND.

But you are describing a scenario that has yet to happen, therefore they don’t belong on the list. PSU, ND, and Michigan belong on the list.

The early 00’s were 23 years ago now.

Texas A&M's history of not living up to expectations year after year after year eliminates them. They're a joke.

Do underclassmen football players at PSU still live in the dorms? Do upperclassmen football players at PSU still live in Nittany Apartments?

Dumb question, but is it common amongst the BLUE. BLOODS. o_O for players to live in football dorms or apartments, sequestered from other students?

Not sure - I think it’s a mix of both - some schools keep football players separate from general student population (noting some live off campus), and others are mixed together (but are in the nicest dorms, like Auburn). But, football specific housing is often lumped in with ‘facility upgrades’ you hear coaches, including Franklin in September (noting we lost a top recruit and almost DDS because of old dorms), clamoring for.

Do you know why they continue to play the service academies?

Are you kidding? Having to consult with and get the approval of all the football coaching savants on The McAndrew Board for every little thing? And then bear the wrath of the all-knowing football gurus here if done differently?

This board laughs at the old adage - Coaches that listen to the fans soon will be sitting amongst them.
