I’ve always liked Serios. It’s a hole in the wall blue collar type place on St Charles.

Forgot to say Central is closed from the hurricane damage.
Sidney's next door was selling Central Muffalettas when I was down there last year. They sold X number each day.

DiMartinos has been good, but it's also had razor sharp bread at times. Like Edward Scissorhands to the roof of your mouth.

Cochon is great.

Make it easy on yourself. Walk to Central Gricery and don’t look back. Eat on the riverbank with a 6 pack of Dixie.
That’d be a great idea if only you could get a Dixie beer.
Still - go to Central Grocery and get one of the best if not THE best in NOLA.
No sense in wasting a bunch of time on these, - unlike trying 2-3 different po-boys in NOLA.

They’re all the same. Get one at a truck stop in Slidell to scratch the itch then get real food in the city

Liquor store next door is selling them for CG until they re-open. Have not had one last two visits to NOLA so may not be the same as actually going into CG and having that experience.
I forgot about them closing so
- - - go to
Parasols
2533 Constance St
It’s in the Garden District but worth the drive which isn’t that far really.
Stop at Casamentos on Magazine and get a couple doz raw oysters before you get there.

Seems to me Central Grocery Muffs may have cut back some on their meats at some point. The ones I got in the 70's & 80's were beefier, if I recall correctly.

Still, CG is my go-to anytime I go to NO. Must be the bread & the olive salad spread they use that keeps them at the top of my list.

On a side note, I got a decent one in Gulfport a few years ago, I think at the Island View Casino. Not CG level, but not bad.

Don’t think it’s that close to you but Come Back Inn is the best I’ve ever had. It’s the size of a spare tire for less than $20 and is perfection. We were just talking about going over to the Zurich in April and grabbing one for dinner on the way home.

Staying on Poydras st. So not to far out of this area please.
Was, is now, and forever will be Central Grocery.....hands down and elbows off the table. Take a Barq's and sit in Jackson Square if it's open on a bench.

Nice,

Grab a jar of their Olive Salad and you can make your own Muffuletta at home. Sourcing the real deal bread can be a challenge.
That's the kicker. The bread is the key to a great muffelata and it's a real search.

Same thing can be said of Po-boy bread. Impossible to find in Cali. Don't know if it's the difference in climate, etc., but making it out here doesn't seem to work.

Muffs & Po-boy bread are 2 things I really miss about living in Mississippi.

Yup, I used to get it at Jason's Deli in Jackson, but they've closed (like most everything else decent in Jackson).

They would sell single loaves. Pretty sure they still get it from Leidenheimers in NO.

Ok guys. I should have let y’all know. I’m no new comer to the city. Nor am I a novice Muffuletta consumer. Having said that here we go.
Went to Cochon for lunch. We’ve been to the restaurant and the butcher a few times. Never had the muffuletta. It’s good. I wouldn’t say it was the best I’ve ever had but it was a good solid muff. The bread was a 10. The meats were good but not outstanding. I could have used more olives in the olive salad too. Still good but not as good as some of the other listed here. If I have time I’m getting another one on the way out tomorrow and I’ll update everyone.
Side note. El Gato Negro was good for dinner too! Table side Ceviche was the bomb!!

It's a personal taste thing on the olive spread. I don't like it to overwhelm the sandwich, so some sandwiches that people love are too dominated by a pickled flavor to me.

If the breads right and the meats solid, it'll make me happy no matter the olive spread.

I am surprised you didn't find the meat to be pretty great. I assume they make most, if not all in house.

Casamentos near south end of Magazine St. The oyster loaf. They have Dixie also.

All this evoking great memories of my dad taking me as a young lad to a Saints game at Tulane Stadium. I think it may have been the very first game....the one where John Gilliam returned the opening kickoff for a TD.

First stop was Central Grocery where we had Muffs. Dad's with a Dixie & mine with a Barq's rootbeer. I recall walking through a section of Oak trees brimming with Spanish Moss as we made our way to the stadium. Eddie Khayat was the DL coach for the Saints & a long-time friend of my dad's.

They were both Golden Gloves Boxing champs in their respective divisions & I believe may have played football together for a bit at Perk, though by that time my dad had already torn up his knee, so wasn't the player he had been prior. In any case, he & Eddie were tight. I still own a football signed by the team, including Billy Kilmer, Doug Adkins, Earl Leggett, Jim Taylor & more.

Also have one from the Washington Redskins, 1960-something.

Nor Joe’s in Old Metairie is my favorite. I’ve lived just a few blocks from there for over a decade now fwiw. Also; Nor Joe will heat the sandwich, which makes the olive salad even better…
