Sorry, but you are all wrong....There is a new bar opening in Vegas!!!! It will be just inside the gates in Highlands Plantation. The name will be Cowbells. It will be on the same platform as a Buffalo Wild wings. Your veiwing pleasure will be enhanced with 4 projector screens (2 at 100 Inches, 2 at 125), 3 52 Inch Plasmas, 5 42 Inch Plasmas, all booths will have there own 15 inch plasma and even 12 inch flat screens above the urinals... It will have resort status meaning it will open all the time including Sundays for beer, bourbon and football as well as later at night (probably 3 AM) on Thurs. - Sat. For game days, it will be the absolute best place in Starkville for TV and drinks! It will be owned and operated by Mr. Rick Welch of Ricks Cafe. There will be a full food menu to choose from as well. It should be open by early mid July and will have capacity of about 800 Min. The beer coolers have been installed this morning and the parking lot was framed today.... So make your plans now and remember, all good things in Starkville include cowbells!!!!!

The entrance is across from the Ford Dealership, kind of beside the Shell, just before you get on the bypass...

Still say a sports bar should go into the old Burger King as well.

I wouldn't get my hopes up until they opened the damn doors. They've been working on that thing since I moved out to the Highlands in '03.

I don't think Rick was behind it at that point, but I could be wrong.

Interesting, I look at it everyday when I drive by (I live in Highlands), and haven't seen much progress on it hardly since before christmas.. it was supposed to have a big opening for the super bowl but things werent near complete in time for that to happen. I know the guys who will be in charge and running it (besides rick) and the last couple times i have asked any progess it was up in the air, ground has been too wet for doing any of the outside work.
I'll have to ride by later and see whats new

If they can truly keep the "resort" status..because it will get challenged I'm sure once the bar is open..then this could be an awesome place. Only big thing I am worried about is 800 drunk people winding down the narrow 2 lane highland entrance with the speedbumps. There are already 2 major holes in the fence just the time since school has been out. and its not uncommon for them to have to fix the fence once a month somewhere from an idiot driving off the road through it.

great idea.

But, we really need is a large traditional bar right outside the gates of the campus on University Drive. We need one that people can walk to. People could walk to the Burger King, but that stretch of road is not very pedestrian friendly.

saying that they were gonna do this since AT LEAST 03, as one other posted stated. going with the dui thread...this will increase them by40000% seeing as they have road blocks on 82 every second of every day. good luck with getting anyone out there. if starkville would just get with the times, which they will sometime in my life, and allow sales on sunday, then downtown would rule even more. screw driving all the way out to the highlands to get a DUI.

It was originally called Dogwood something. It took at least 8 years to build 18 holes. They go through bankers and investors like Polk goes through cigars. Don't hold your breath.

has resort status, and they can not sell drinks on Sundays. There was talk about that and allowing smoking inside because of the resort status, but neither flew.

2 points....First The bulldog taxi thing will open back up on June 1 ( some legal issues) which is $5 one way anywhere in oktibehha county....Second, yes Rick has only been in the picture for only a short while on this project. Inside the building today (5-22), the walls have been painted, the floor stain is going down, the brick bar and top has been finished. The walkin coolers/ beer coolers were delivered today. Conservative date is July 15th but July 1 is in the mix.

Edit additon: Dawgebag, This is a private entity, nothing to do with highlands other than inside the gates. No partnership with any of the golf course/ land people.
Optimus: This isn't Oxford, its a land development outside the city limits deemed resort status by the State of Mississippi, not a private social club.

ha, back in 03/04, two of my buddies managed to toss their cars into that lake on the south side of the fence. retention pond/lake, i guess. that has to be the worst designed road for that area.

I don't know what happened. I would love a place to watch the NFL and have a cocktail in Oxford. I just don't see it lasting (in Oxford) even if they get the exemption. Somehow some puritan will find a way to have it shut down.

...Highlands Plantation is in the county. The bar in the club house has served beer and liquor on Sundays for years. It won't be an issue.

I just can't imagine a place that serves 800 people not drawing some kind of idiots to complain about how they're harming our children by having a beer while watching the NFL.

Is there anything to prevent five more places from getting resort status and having a little area of bars that are open later and on sundays? that would be cool

i don't see any issue coming up on the resort status at first. like xeno said, the clubhouse has been serving beer and liquor on sundays for a while now. also, they built a pool area and night driving range a couple of years ago and for a while they would have bands and serve beer til everyone left. pretty cool set up but not very user friendly in the winter months. i do like to buy a bucket of beer and go hit range balls at 9 o'clock in the middle of the summer though.

this place should be awesome for a while. the biggest issue that will arise though has already been mentioned (dui) but i don't think it will be the number of dui's that cause a problem. unfortunately once the first person gets killed out there from drunk driving is when we will likely see people trying to do something about the resort status. i still think it will take a lot to change the status since it is out in the county. of course all starkville has to do is try to anex the area but that is a usually long process too.

...I'm not well versed in annexation laws, but doesn't a city have to show they're already incurring costs from having a nearby population ..i.e. Police protection, fire dept coverage, etc. I don't think the city could show such expenses in court. Also, if you've driven through there you have to realize the city probably would never want the expense of bringing the streets up to city specifications. And finally there the issue of city water and sewer. There's no way in hell the current infrastructure could take Highlands being added to the City.

I just don't think it'll ever happen.

no doubt the highlands roads suck balls. i hated the roads out there when i was living there. i agree that it would be a stretch to annex the area but as with most cities, they would love to have the tax revenues from a place with that many people and now what appears to be some other businesses popping up.

it probably won't happen in the near future but i bet it would be talked about if the place continues to grow as it has over the last 10 years. i don't know of the revenues would outweigh the costs you pointed out.

Remember, all of the cookie cutter houses lining those streets are 4 bedroom and most of the others are 3 or 4, so you have close to the 800 living within the gates, so they won't have to drive unless they just really want to

But, as go down University, I can't exactly place where it was. Was it where the 3 story condo building is now that has the electric gate?
