That was a good team. Read Halberstam’s “October 1964,” wonderful. Busch was an owner ahead of his time. Musial set the tone in the years before he retired. He was a beloved teammate. I’m trying to think of a player more universally beloved than Musial, can’t think of anyone. Maybe Bob Uecker.

Gibson had an inner drive up there with Michael Jordan’s. What an impressive man.

I had seen this picture only once or twice before (I wonder why?), so thanks for posting.

Gibson intimidated most ballplayers, but I don't think Uecker was one of them. While the Phillies were hosting the Brewers years ago, Uecker came over to the Phils booth for about a half an inning. He said that one time in a game, he went to the mound to give Gibson a break. When he got there Gibson whirled around and growled "What do you want?" Uecker replied "Nothin'. I'm just going to Center to talk to (Curt)Flood"
