Big name school but not a particularly good team this year. It would be a lot like the Gator Bowl vs Michigan.

I’d take Penn St or Clemson or even Wisconsin right now.
Would love to be matched up vs either of them

Someone already dropped this week's ESPN projections in the Week 10 thread, but the Athletic's projection is welcome.
I believe we could beat any of those, but of those, I'd least like to play Purdue. They have a tendency to play well in big games and have pulled some upsets, but they don't get as much "street cred" as they probably deserve. So beating them wouldn't impress as much as others, losing to them would look worse, and I have a feeling they'd be a tougher opponent.

I'd like a shot at Penn State. Also would enjoy a shot at redemption vs Iowa. Would be fun to take Wake Forest apart this year if they can remain more highly-ranked. A Wisconsin matchup would be interesting...their run vs our run D, our passing vs their pas D. Clemson could be fun, but beat them and it's a "down year for them". Beat them and it's , "Well this wasn't a typical Clemson team", etc.

BTW, Stewart Mandel is thinking there won't be enough 6 win teams to go to bowls and it'll have to go to APR ratings:

Some unlikely results over the weekend initially caused me to bump six teams I previously believed would get to six wins, including Texas and Florida. Unfortunately, that left me two short on eligible teams. I went on the NCAA’s APR database to figure out which projected 5-7 teams come in highest on their rankings. Those teams turned out to be … Texas and Florida.

Enjoy Detroit, Longhorns.

CBS: Texas Bowl vs Kansas State ▲ -- Tuesday, Jan 4th, TBD kickoff, NRG Stadium, Houston, TX - 9 Hr Drive from Starkville, MS. -- UGH, Kansas State?

CFN: Outback Bowl vs Iowa ▲ -- Saturday, Jan 1st, Noon, Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL - 11 Hr Drive from Starkville, MS -- rematch of Iowa would be nice, if we can beat them... they are typically a disciplined and well-prepared team. I believe the players really enjoyed being on the beach in 80 degree weather.

SaturdayDownSouth: Texas Bowl vs Kansas State -

247 Sports: Gator Bowl vs Pitt - Friday, December 31st, 11 AM kickoff, Gator Bowl, Jacksonville, FL - 9 Hr Drive from Starkville, MS -- Pitt has beaten Tennessee and Clemson

Brett McMurphy: Texas Bowl vs Iowa State -

Last Word in Sports: Gator Bowl vs Clemson ▲ -- Wow, playing Clemson would be sweet.... Clemson has little to no offense, so I believe that we would have an excellent chance of winning.

College Sports Madness: Music City Bowl vs Purdue - Thursday, Dec 30th, 2 PM kickoff, Nissan Stadium, Nashville, TN - 5 Hr Drive from Starkville, MS -- Purdue is a prestige team, having knocked off Michigan State.

Athlon Sports: Music City Bowl vs Minnesota ▲
Schlabach: Music City Bowl vs Minnesota ▲
Bonagura: Outback Bowl vs Wisconsin ▲

On3: Duke's Mayo Bowl vs Wake Forest (new) - Thursday, Dec 30th, 11:30 AM, Charlotte, NC - 9 Hour drive from Starkville, MS - Wake Forrest would be an interesting matchup.... perhaps ranked pretty high.

ProFootballNetwork: Music City Bowl vs Penn State (new) - Beating Penn State would be nice!

I would like UVA since the wife is a graduate, also they have KT and their QB is fun to watch.

The SEC tries to make the bowls as much of a true rotation as possible, so I find it a little unlikely that we'd be back in Nashville just two years after most recent trip there. You've also got the dynamic of several SEC bowl games getting cancelled last year, so I'm curious to see how that impacts the selections.

My hope is that we play a respected Power 5 blueblood, regardless of the bowl. No disrespect to the Purdue's and Iowa State's of the world, but it's been a while since we've played a big name program in a bowl game. Arguably haven't really done it since the Gator Bowl against Michigan, and that's been over a decade ago now.

How'd the Texas bowl get stuck on a Tuesday after New Years? That's a horrible date. Maybe good for TV exposure but would be impossible for the average fan to go.

Right. I still think that if we blow them out, we can pass them in the rankings even with an extra loss. Does that mean we go to the Sugar Bowl? Maybe so

Yeah, I saw that.... I guess it will give us great national exposure (only game going on), but people may be over bowl games by then....

The Florida bowls look really attractive... I believe playing Clemson in the Gator on New Year's eve, or Wake Forrest (highly ranked in BCS right now) would be great....

Outback bowl in Tampa would be great... I believe Leach would prepare us better against a good Iowa team (ranked in the top 20 in the BCS) would be great as well.... Being ranked in the BCS (top 20 hopefully after a win over Ole Miss) and beating another highly ranked BCS team will only move us upward in the rankings, since so many BCS-ranked teams will play each other (half losing).

I suspect the players would like hanging out at the beach as a reward for a great season.

Getting max exposure nationally, Will having a great game - 5 TD passes & 500 yards passing, us beating a name-brand (like Clemson, Wake, Iowa, etc.) would be a great launch for "Will Rogers for Heisman 2022"... It will also help us wrap up strong in recruiting. With the Heisman hype kicked off, it will put a big spring in the steps of all 85 players during the offseason conditioning.

We're not passing Mississippi in the rankings. We're probably not passing Texas A&M either. We'll be in the group of 6 bowl pretty much no matter what happens.

In ten years, nobody will think that. If Clemson is ever 'back'... that will be an impressive win in the record books. Nobody thinks about that New Year's Massacre on January 1, 2011 and says "well, the Big Ten was down that year" or "well, Michigan wasn't very good back then". People remember that Alabama beat Michigan State, Florida beat Penn State, and Mississippi State beat Michigan like they stole something.

We don't sit here and look at how historically bad Alabama was from 1996-2007. We just enjoy all 6 wins (including one 3-peat) we had against them during that time frame.

I want the best possible bowl for the team of coarse but I hope it’s a fairly reasonable drive. I really want to go to a bowl this year but I’m not willing to book a flight for it.

They'll still have a better overall and conference record than us. We're not passing them.

Overall true, but we would be 5-3 in conference, same as them.

And besides that, our 5-3 would get us second place in the SEC west with head to head tie breakers.

I'd say given the way the SEC likes to rotate teams ..I'd say we go back to Charlotte regardless.

I want one of those haughty G5 teams that's been ranked in the Top 20 all season, so Will and Co. can run them off the field during the game and then we can kick their *** in the ensuing after-game brawl. Hail State!

Here's the strange thing about how this year has played out.

If we beat Ole Miss and everything else happens as it should, there will be four teams with a 5-3 conference record

Mississippi State
Ole Miss
Texas A&M
Kentucky

Instead of a jumbled mess, its actually very clean. State would have beaten all three teams with identical 5-3 records. I think Citrus is definite if we beat Ole Miss. If we beat Ole Miss and Alabama makes the playoff, the conversation is at least being had to have us in the Sugar, especially if LSU were to beat A&M.

That is strange. But bowls aren't decided based on tiebreakers. The Sugar Bowl gets the highest ranked SEC team not in the playoff, and then the Citrus gets their choice of the remaining non-NY6 teams. It will be very hard for us to pass UM in the rankings even with an Egg Bowl win, we might could pass A&M though. And I don't see the Citrus picking an 8-4 MSU team over a 9-3 UM or Texas A&M team.

LOL, Ole Miss always wins the party, but Mississippi State always wins the post-game fight...

Winning against a blue-blood on National TV would be a nice kickoff to the 'Will Rogers for Heisman' campaign.
