So LSU overpaid Kelly $1mm and he didn't notice or thought that he should mention it to them. Probably too busy working on his dance moves or new accent.

Now that the LSU administration didn't notice it doesn't surprise me in the least. Maybe Emmert can return to his old stomping grounds to help them straighten out their payroll issues.

How fast would he notice if the error went the other way?

Yeah, so Kelly and LSU have agreed to an "adjusted payment schedule" so that the school will recover the money by the end of 2023. How about Kelly simply writing them a check for the full amount.....now!?!?

Maybe kelly has a lot of bills to pay. That Baton Rouge mortgage, for example. Maybe he’s really charitable.

I also saw some of the money was paid to an LLC. Is that standard practice in the coaching industry?

I don't blame Kelly for taking the money. But I guess LSU's payroll system is still using the glitchy version 1 of QuickBooks.

I find it very reasonable to believe that BK (or CJF for that matter) probably don't carry around a checkbook and balance it every month. Nor would it be likely that he could tell you within a few hundred thousand $$ what his banking account balance was on an given day. He (they) certainly have a team of financial folks who handle the mundane issues of paying bills, etc. Those are the folks who should have seen this issue almost immediately.

It's a universal rule in accounting (and common sense) that you will always find out quickly when you underpay someone and rarely find out when you overpay someone.

Don't know how common it is in coaching, but there's nothing wrong in directing comp payments to an LLC owned by the coach.

I get it. Guys like Kelly and Franklin have difficulty with numbers greater than three except when it's contract time. But if If Kelly's "team of financial folks" didn't immediately bring to his attention an unexpected, recurring inflow of nearly $85k/mo. they ought to be fired. It's not like the pigfucker is making Bezos money. Guess the excuse is that they got their accounting degrees from LSU.

something similar happened to me but at a much smaller scale. I was paid a monthly bonus to come to a new company for 12 months. This was when they stopped sending paychecks and just made an electronic payment and you had to go check the stubb online. Well, I didn't. The company overpaid me for 9 months. I had to pay it back, of course, but it happened over a tax year. They gave me a settlement contract to sign and I asked for a day to review with a tax attorney. they said, "no, you've got to sign it right now". they insinuated it was my fault. I asked what would happen if I didn't sign it. They said I'd be let go. I stood up and handed them my employee ID badge and laptop. They freaked out. I told them I didn't want to work for a company that wouldn't even let me talk to an attorney.

There is also the story that the clubhouse attendants found a several old year check to Manny Ramirez for $250,000 on the bottom of his locker when he changed teams. When you have that much money, what is a few million here and a few million there?

Raise your hand if you’re giving back, say $100k, to your employer.
I’ll wait here (forever)
You do if the employer made a mistake. You didn’t earn the money. About 2 weeks ago, I gave back $15k to a client that double-paid me. The client would have never caught the mistake given the nature of our contract. But it was an easy decision to give them their money back.

I think this is different. If someone overs pays me, or gives me too much change, I always give it back, unless of course that person has been a total a hole to me.

Much smaller scale, but I've done this before (given too much change) for a local fair entry. I gave $10 and expected $5 back. They gave me $15 back, assuming I gave them a $20. I realized it after about 30 seconds and went back to return the extra cash.

Nothing wrong with living a clean honest life.

This reminds me of the time I visited Christopher’s Hardware in Ashton before they moved across the street. I went there a week or so before the move and the owner was her usual bubbly self while checking me out. “Are you ready for the move?” “Yeah, it’s going to be a challenge but it’ll be great.” She then proceeded to give me a buck too much change. “Are you sure you’re ready for the move?” Big laughs all around. It’s a good hardware store, just saying.
