Guess we feel differently about “most people”. I’ve learnt most people are pretty despicable
There’s a chance you’re not hanging with the best crowd.
I mean, this is not like getting an extra $5 from the checkout lady (which I would also give back). If it’s coming from your employer overpaying you they are most likely going to figure it out and make you pay it back anyway. Might as well do it right away.

Raise your hand if you’re giving back, say $100k, to your employer.
I’ll wait here (forever)
Aside from it being a matter of personal integrity, of which you apparently have none (big surprise there), lets look at it another way:

Raise your hand if you'd be surprised that your employer would fire you one they discovered the error of which you never bothered to inform them?

But since you asked, yes, I had a case where my employer credited my account (for an amount considerably larger than $100k) in error and I advised them of it immediately on discovery.

What sucks is he paid the tax on that million. Now he has to pay a million back. So he is out 200-400k? Would that be correct?

In all likelihood taxes were withheld by LSU so on a cash basis his "over" (or under, it is possible) payment isn't much. LSU issued him an amended W-2, copy to the IRS, he files an amended 1040 and he pays or gets refunded the difference, which might be about $200, but nowhere between $200K-400K. Additionally, he had use of the net for two or more years.

So you’re doing it because you know it’ll get caught eventually? Got it

Living in South Bend and attending several Notre Dame sporting events each year has taught me that, no matter how bad their season is going, they’re thrilled to be rid of this horse’s ***.
