Hold - On the fence on this -
After reading that old article about Jackie Sherrill and how he came to be at Mississippi State, I think Templeton was kind of bound to Jackie and would have stuck with him unless he had multiple 'Tech & 10' seasons. You also have to remember, we were coming off some really bad Rockey Felker years (5 SEC wins, 1 win against Ole Miss and of course 'Tech & 10' in 5 years) when Jackie got here, so Jackie had some goodwill built in after starting his tenure with a win over #13 Texas, an Egg Bowl win, and a bowl appearance.
That being said... I'm not sure Templeton would have survived those numbers either...
But it's not just the rise of the internet itself, it's also:
1. The influx of huge TV contracts - The money coming in now is what? 5X-10X what it was 30 years ago? I don't think you can have the Templeton mindset with that kind of money coming in.
2. The increase in sports media outlets - Part of this is online media, but before 93 there was only one ESPN. Now there's ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3, ESPNNews, ESPN Classic, ESPN+, SEC Network, ACC Network, ESPN Deportes, Longhorn Network, FS1, CBS Sports, CBS Sports HQ, Stadium, Big Ten Network, Pac-12 Network, MLB Network, NFL Network, and multiple regional networks like SportsNet and BallySports. Every single one of them has to have content to fill time and when it's not being filled with live sports, it's usually filled with talking heads on a split screen or around a desk talking about who should be fired in the realm of sports they're discussing.
3. Realignment - There is no fear from a Mississippi State fan's perspective about Mississippi State being booted from the SEC (or at least there shouldn't be). The fear really comes into play if Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and maybe Tennessee ever decide to join up with the Ohio States, USCws, and Florida States of the world to form a separate super conference. I'm not sure it's warranted, but I feel a lot more confident in the leadership in place now making sure Mississippi State has a place at the table than I did 20 years ago.
