Buy/Sell: Ravern Johnson is the best shooter since Wilson at MSU.

I say buy. We have had some good shooters like Bowers, Frazier, Power, etc. but when Ravern pulls up it seems like he is going to hit every shot he takes.

I think he can be - but he's been streaky. I just hope his defense improves in the next few games. We need him.

his career percentage isnt that good actually. He was streaky as hell and could get on a roll though...problem with Ravern is that he is the "white guy that can shoot it but is a liability on D"...Ravern couldnt guard Iupe

He never shot over 37% from the perimeter or 46% from the floor. Ravern hit nearly 40% from the perimeter last year and is at 49% this year. He's also near 54% overall.

Winsom was one of the best defensive guards and my favorite player I've ever seen play at MSU. However, when it comes to the shot, he's no Ravern.

Bullard led the team in 3 point % in 1996. And yes, Ravern is certainly the best since then. During conference play we will find out if he is better.

I am buying mainly because Ravern has one of the silkiest strokes in all of college basketball. When he is on he seems to make everything he throws up nothing but net.

Ravern plays the worst man defense I've seen since Erick Stevens under Williams. Stevens almost gave Williams a coronary on multiple occasions.

raverne has something rarely seen in today's college game. The ability to pull up from 15-18 feet and hit a jumper.

i don't remember him doing that. jamall edmondson also comes to mind. in the paint, mario austin was excellent at the matador-style defense.

i'd have to give the edge to ravern, though, because his length should make him a tough perimeter defender.

For the most part he was a terrible 3-point shooter. About 1 game in 5 he'd catch fire and hit 5 of 8, but those nights were few and far between.</p>

and he's playing a little better on defense. he needs to step it up a lot, though. if he was just an average defender i think he could be really good in the nba. a 6'7" guy who shoots near 50% for 3 is nice.

edit: only person who is taller in the top 50 for 3 point % is a 6'8" guy from notre dame

I think one of the keys with Darryl Wilson was incredible confidence. He knew his shots were going in. At times, I can see that same confidence in Ravern. When he's hot, Ravern has a tendency to laugh a little. Not in a mocking way, but just sorta noting that he's hot and he knows it. Good shooter.

Maybe Ravern is a bigger underachiever on D, but Edmondson made the slow white point guard from Ole Miss (his name escapes me although I'd probably still just describe him as the slow white guy, no matter how redundant) look like an All American. I haven't gotten to watch much this year, but if Ravern is as bad as Edmunson with his size and athletic ability, I'd probably gouge my eyes out after watching it.

Getting hurt doesn't explain away shooting 32.1%, 33.7% and 33.7% on 3-point shots his first 3 years (BTW, those are NOT good 3-point shot percentages).

I knew his freshman year was rough, but sophomore and junior years were on point. Or so I thought.

I'm buying like crazy. Ravern is the definition of a player who will be as good as he wants to be, and it looks like he's beginning to realize that potential. I didn't have much hope for him this year based on how he finished last year, but it's clear he's worked on his game and is now rounding an all-around game together nicely. He's still stroking it from downtown and seems to be more consistent, he's nailing the mid-range jumper, and he's finally learning how to use his athleticism to drive the lane and get easy baskets. If he continues to improve, you really won't be able to guard him.

but Wilson was better all around , especially on defense. It will be interesting to see if Ravern still gets his minutes in SEC play. I remember last year, the 2OT game against LSU specifically , where he didnt get in but for a couple of minutres because Stans was concerned about his defensive ability . One can only hope he has imporved on the defensive end and doesnt create opportunities for our opponents. Tasmin Mitchell scored at will on Ravern last year.

Tasmin Mitchell scored at will against everyone on our team last year. Dont just put that on Ravern

They forget that for every one of those games he'd have 2 where he went 1-7 from behind the arc. I like Frazier and he was a hell of a defensive player for us, but he was never a consistent shooter.

Frazier had a better overall game. I miss his chase you down from behind blocks on what seemed to be uncontested layups. After that freak injury in Oxford we lost momentum at that point. Lost 8 or 9 games following the injury although it was during the SEC schedule. One could argue with a healthy Frazier we finish stronger. Typical burial ground scenario......

he and Timmy B (the one that doesn't suck) delivered the most awesome comeback in Mississippi State basketball history on the road at Alabama. Most incredible thing I have witnessed in my life hoops-wise. Road Dawgs!
