but I'm hoping for a second round matchup against one of these overrated mid-majors (Drake, Gonzaga, Butler, St. Mary's)

I believe we would blow them out of the gym, if they make it out of the first round.

But we aren't going to be seeded high enough to play most of those. Lunardi has them projected as:

Drake - #5 seed
Xavier - #3 seed
Gonzaga - #7 seed
St. Mary's - #9 seed

We might play St. Mary's in the 1st round, but I don't want that either because it will mean we're a #8 seed (plus or minus 1). I'd rather play our way into a #6 seed and then play Xavier in the 2nd round.

Maroon Eagle says that Illinois State is the second coming of 1968 UCLA and Drake beat them by 30 points so I'm skeered to play Drake!

They were a #5 seed and made it to the Sweet 16 before losing to Florida 65-57.

It is possible, but I would be willing to bet that they couldn't handle playing an entire season in the SEC. If they were in the SEC West they would have taken their bumps and beatings and damn sure wouldn't have been a 5 seed, and more than likely wouldn't have been in the tournament period. I say there's no way they could win the West. It's one thing to beat an SEC team or play them tough once, it's another to play them and beat them twice a week.

Put down the crack pipe..
No way the win the west, winning a game or two in the tourney is one thing.
You can't play like that all year on the road in the SEC.

It wouldn't have taken a hell of lot for them to win the West last year. We tied with Mississippi for the title with an 8-8 record. As for the part about them not being able to handle playing in the SEC day in and day out, that's just ********. Last year in a span of 11 days they beat Notre Dame, Indiana, Tennessee and Gonzaga. They also beat Purdue and Maryland. The only major conference team they lost to was Florida (and only by 8 points to the 2-time national champs at that).

They also lost @ Illinios (Chicago), @ Indiana St., @ Wright State (TWICE), and at home to Loyola (IL). It's a little tougher on the road in the SEC then in the mighty Horizon league.

But you can't ignore the fact they were 5-1 against major conference teams last year. And it's not like they were playing the bad ones either. All 6 of those games were against teams that had winning conference records and all had top 50 RPIs. Hell, we lost at George Mason last year (and not the good George Mason team of a couple of years ago) and still managed to win the West.

Agree. Looking at their schedule they had some great wins. I just don't think they would've won the West.

coached and disciplined but they are not very impressive physically. No way they match up with the Dawgs athletically. They are nothing like the team that beat us in the dance. The only way they beat us is if we play sloppy and the RAHT crops up.

We'll never know, but they'd have definitely been in the mix.
