Never heard that one either. Thought they always called themselves "The Harvard of the South". The town of Oxford is actually named after Oxford, England.
“Oxford” coming from the words “oxen” which are bovines (such as cows from a cow college) and “ford” which means walking through a river or other stream of water thus, when put together, means the place that is so shallow that bovines have little trouble at all just walking through it. 😉
