I believe that Newton gives us a quick fix right now. jcdawgman said part of my reasoning. Obviously, I'm sure if you put them in a QB competition now, Newton wins the job for us. However, I also think about when Bumphis and Russell's class are juniors and seniors. Think about if Russell has two to three years starting experience with that class and the class we have coming in. If Russell is what he is talked up to be and and if he is everything that gave him his position in recruiting, think about the chemistry that offense could have together. They would of been playing with each other for 3 years at least. Their are advantages to us getting him and not getting him. If we get him, we get a quick fix QB for 2 years who hopefully is what he is cracked up to be. If we do not, we develop a four year QB in Russell that has already been in the program for a year and familiarized himself with our offensive schemes. When I look at it like that, it is tempting to take Russell for me.

Russell will be much better in 2012 than in 2010 whether he starts or sits the bench behind Newton. The difference in Russell with 2 years of starting experience vs. 2 years of sitting behind Newton isn't nearly as big as the difference between Newton next year vs. Russell next year. We'll be much better off if we can sign Newton, both in the short run and in the long run.

I don't think you or I could judge how often HS ballplayers undergo the level of scrutiny that Sidney has. I'm sure it's not always so public as this. I think most kids and families cooperate with the NCAA much better than the Sidneys have. I think this is perceived as a witchhunt only by the Sidneys, their lawyer, and MSU homers like us. The rest of the country hasn't clammered about this at all. The reporters who comment say nothing critical of the NCAA. That's because they have done the right thing here. The Sidneys hired a lawyer early in the process because they anticipated a fight. Why? Because they had something to hide. THis kid had been talked about as the poster boy for AAU excess long before he came to MSU. That is why the california schools backed off of him. Because they knew this would play out like it has. He would not have been cleared anywhere, period. If he had signed to play at Ole Miss or Bama, I bet you'd feel differently. I am a long-time Bulldog Club member and would love to see him play, but I recognize that what the NCAA has done is the right thing. And when they hammer USC for the OJ Mayo and Reggie Bush stuff, it will be the right thing too.
