The head coach for the Steelers doesn't report to the GM and has free reign over his assistant coaches. Personally I never cared to blame assistant coaches for schemes as they are beholden to run what the head coach wants.
Never hire someone that is a threat to take your job?

I thought it was traditional for the HC to report to the GM, and would be typical for the HC to choose their OC/DC but probably consult with the GM. The owner is like a stockholder in a corporation - they would not normally hire staff. The GM is always consulting on HC hire/fire decisions as $$$ are involved and a major impact to the franchise.

What was the attraction of the Canada hire in the first place? Given the departure of Big Ben - who made two HC's look pretty good, Stillers are in a new position. They need OC and DC at a level who could be HC if needed. Pickens, Friermuth and Harris are the core of this team on offense. Take those 3 out and this offense would struggle to get 14 pts per game.

The Steelers don't run like every other franchise. That's where the stability comes from, but also may be where the recent mediocrity has come from.

Jerry Jones is the model of owner intervention. He thinks since he was a player that he knows the game and needs of the team. that is why a guy like Parcells could not stay there. This is typical of company founders who become Chairman of the Board - they have a hard time letting go of the controls.

I did not realize Rooney would be involved in player selection. its his money as the sole owner, so he can do what he wants. However, if you are not a talent evaluator, as an owner you might want to defer to the experts you hired. Don't know his history as a football guy.
