"Also arrested in 2019 for writing bad checks at the airport."

Who writes checks anymore?
I write up to a half dozen a year; they are usually "one-offs" for a seller of goods/services who doesn't accept cards. Pales in comparison to the number of checks I wrote 30 years ago (perhaps an average of 20 a month).

I do write them to pay a few bills the old fashioned way. Trying to think what you could buy with a check at an airport though. Maybe the currency exchange counter or something

Good point. Before we drove to Canada in June 2016, my wife visited the airport to get a decent fee on Canadian currency exchange. But I imagine she used a debit/credit card to do so.

But back to 18Is TheMan's point - what is it with folks? Did the Captain get lost in the shuffle in Columbia and Charlotte, and missed out on some life skills training?

Arrested on charges of assault...strangling and kicking a woman in the face. Out on bond now. For all involved, I certainly hope it's not true.

I hope the same - I sincerely do. But I'll say this, if there is strong probable cause to believe a person committed offenses such as these - not a he said/she said situation, mind you - I'm talking about physical evidence linking a person to the crime - that person should not get bail. I don't care what the contemporary trends are. Such a person should not be granted bail. It appears, however, that the evidence in this case is anecdotal.

May not believe this but I still got my original check book when I opened my account around 20 years ago.I burned the box that came in the mail and kept the 1.I still have it and probably haven’t used half of it yet. It’s been a few years since I’ve used it.
On Captain,I hope he was just having a bad day.Everyone has issues that we don’t know about.

Exactly the entities to whom I disburse checks. My wife pays a few bills using checks.
It's kind of a drag nowadays to be behind someone paying by check at the supermarket. And some of them are younger than me. Then we have to all wait on them to fill out their ledger.

I have several unused checkbooks with the dates listed as ________________, 19__.

I might write 2-3 checks a year using it. Lawn guy sounds about right.

If I’m going to write a check, I partially fill it out before going in the store to avoid that. Wish others would do the same
It's probably been at least 5 years since I wrote out a check in a retail store. And they usually turn it into an ACH back draft on the spot.

Even my lawn guy can be paid through my email and apple pay now. The odds on my 9 checks in the book making it to 2023 is Very high 90+%

People who are doing something illegal. I remember once in my past life (previous marriage) I had to buy gas on the way to work. I had already pumped it and my car was declined thanks to my ex. I had my checkbook and asked if they would take a check. To my astonishment, the clerk took it. It was near the end of the week and I beat the check to the bank. That's harder to do nowadays. I think most places run the check just as they would a debit card.

I could give to church electronically but they gave me these envelopes so...

As it is, we do checks for daycare (though they are about to go electronic) and church (12 each year). Our church debated going with electronic giving, but our pastor thought it was poor stewardship to pay a fee (either by the church or the giver). Supposedly, churches that switch to electronic giving see an increase in giving to more than offset any fees.

Many people who skip church don't feel a need to contribute a tithe for that week. So I'd say that's exactly right. I also get the pastor's point. If there's no action to giving, does it feel like giving? IDK. I'm on our church financial committee and we're about to go to an app that you can give electronically through.

Sadly, after we started doing livestream during covid, we actually had one person ask our treasurer if we were going to start electronic giving b/c then he'd could just do it all from home, watch and give.

Or just set up an auto monthly/weekly bank draft or electronic bill payer.

I have a friend who does that. He and his wife go on the high holidays and just tithe regularly the rest of the time. I met him for lunch one day and we were driving to the restaurant. We went by a church and he said "That's our church...I think".

Interesting. Covid brought about live streaming at our church and has continued even after we opened back up. The bad news is that live attendance is down. The good news is that giving has stayed strong. I hope we'll see attendance "normalize" in the months ahead. Christian people need the interpersonal contact that church affords.

That is exactly what WalMart did when I wrote checks in their locations a few years ago.

Show how long it's been since I wrote a check in a store.
In my case, that was about 5 years ago. No telling what's changed since then.

These days, my cursive writing is basically limited to signing my name. It feels weird to write more than my signature, e.g., making out a check.

I always had poor penmanship, and what ineptitude didn't accomplish, arthritis has.:(

You can't make out my scrawl anymore. It all started when I became a draftsman and had to letter everything in all caps print 1/8" high. My cursive hand never came back.

I have a brother whose cursive handwriting looks like calligraphy. I envy that guy.
