Colts trading Carson Wentz to Commanders

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports Washington is sending Indianapolis a package of picks that includes a pair of third-round selections. Washington will also take on the full remainder of Wentz’s contract.

Wentz is due a $22 million salary and $6.294 million roster bonus in 2022, a $20 million salary and a $6.176 roster bonus in 2023, and a $21 million salary and $6.235 roster bonus in 2024.

After coming to Indianapolis from Philadelphia via trade, Wentz had a middling 2021 season. He started all 17 games for the Colts, compiling a 9-8 record. He completed 62.4 percent of his passes for 3,563 yards with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His sack rate also went down from a whopping 10.3 percent in 2020 to 5.8 percent in 2021.

But Wentz faltered when it mattered most late in the season. With two chances to clinch a playoff berth in Weeks 17 and 18, Wentz was just 16-of-27 for 148 yards with a touchdown against the Raiders on Jan. 2. Then he was sacked six times while completing just 17-of-29 passes for 185 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the Week 18 loss to Jacksonville. He also lost a fumble in that contest.

Thanks Jim

swap seconds this year, commanders give up a 3rd this and next year. Next year 3rd becomes second if Wentz plays 70% plus snaps.

Man….. as much as I hate to say this, howie looks smarter and smarter with this. Something had to happen in that last season with the eagles that pushed them over the edge to give up the dead cap hit and 2nd pick that was Wentz so soon after signing him.

This will be interesting twice a year for the eagles….

No, it won’t. He’s a bust and he’s going to cost the Commanders $28 million this season. There’s a reason why some franchises can’t seem to ever succeed. It’s moves like this. Indy had one season with him and his former position coach to right the ship and they chose to bail. That says all you need to know.

Ugh. I’m in no position to argue with this level of reasoning.

Why? 2 mediocre to bad teams playing each other. One has a former #2 overall pick as their QB, who is a bust. The other has a dynamic athlete, but unproven QB, at the helm who the franchise and fans aren’t sure they want. Unless I missed something, Wentz is not going to turn the Washington franchise into contenders.

I'm not surprised because of all the chatter, but his numbers were actually pretty good, and had the Colts have won 1 of their last 2 games, I think he stays in Indy. Might there have been something else than performance, maybe his refusal to be a team player and get the vaccine ? I mean, yes, he crapped the bed the last game, and the attempted left handed throw out of the endzone for a TD was really bad, but other than that, not much worse than most of the other QB's in the league. And, who do the Colts get now, not too many good options out there.

8 games last year he threw for less than 200 yards, including a 57-yard performance against the Patriots. In today's NFL, that is not a good stat for a high-priced QB.

I’m a Washington fan, and I’m not exactly brimming over with enthusiasm about this. Still, they needed a quarterback and got him fairly cheaply. (I’m not up to speed on the cap hit.)
Well, at least it isn’t Goff.

As a Giants fan, I heartily endorse this trade. Welcome back to the NFC East.

Yeah, 18th in yardage, but 10th in TD's thrown. With a guy like Jonathan Taylor, he didn't need to throw as much, and when it counted for , he threw for TD's. Not saying he was the best, just wondering what they think they will get that is better. 2nd rd pick Desmond Ridder or Carson Strong- Free agent Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston ?? Not sure.
