CJF vs Joepa’s coaching style

Yesterday’s game provoked some interesting thoughts about how Joepa coached vs how CJF coaches. I’m not sure if Joe’s approach or CJF’s approach would be more effective with today’s players, but I couldn’t help thinking about how the two coaches typically would go about their business.

After Singleton’s first fumble, I wondered if Joepa might have sat Singleton for the rest of the game in that situation.

CJF let Singleton carry the ball again, and Singleton fumbled again. But at least I saw CJF get truly angry yesterday after all of the turnovers. That anger may be more effective by CJF, because he rarely seems to coach angry.

I think CJF’s natural approach is to encourage his players and “love ‘‘em up”. But some teams need a coach who chews them out from time to time. I think this Penn State team needs chewed out. They can be special, but they don’t yet seem to have that internal leadership that allows the coach to be a good guy all the time. I hope CJF has the right read on his team and can push the right buttons going forward.

I may be misremembering, but I’m pretty sure that after Singleton’s first fumble, he was immediately replaced with Lee and it remained that way for at least a few possessions. And that Allen was first put in immediately after one of the later fumbles (not sure if it was Lee’s, or Singleton’s 2nd.)

After Allen fumbled, I thought for sure we’d see Ford, not knowing yet that he’d left the team.

I don't think we see much about what any coach's real style is- we see (and don't even hear) a few hours on the sidelines from a distance. We don't see them in practice, in the locker room, recruiting, or in meetings.

Joe used to get vilified here for not wearing a headset- and that man missed nothing. CJF gets vilified for pretty much everything- and I don't think he misses any more than Joe did.

One of the reasons I took a special shine to Aaron Harris is that he fumbled against USC early in his first game and my father told me, “Watch, Joe will give him the ball again.” Harris scored a TD later in the game.

There’s a lot people don’t see.

Joe didn’t have to worry about RBs leaving the team at a drop of a hat. So it’s easier to bench the kid when you have more choices to replace the kid.
Yep. That’s what I mean about CJF’s style perhaps being more suited to today’s players. But if he picks his spots, getting angry can be very effective because it is so “out of character” for him.

Joe started coaching about 1950 the year I was born. He played in the 40's. There really have been just a few changes in strategy, schemes, philosophy and player development......LOL ......I love Joe, but I don't think comparisons are valid.

Not about , it was 1950 , because he came with Rip Engle , who was his head coach at Brown . And there has been a lot of change in all of the above you mentioned . But yes do not compare . Joe was Joe and Franklin is Franklin . Let it go at that

Yeah... my recollection was Joe would always go right back to an RB that had fumbled.....

Pretty sure JFs anger was being directed at the RB coach.
Ja Juan Seider is basically Franklin’s equivalent to what Butler was for OBrien. As such he’s “Teflon” despite his coaching incompetency.

Interesting, I didn't think about JoePa one time during yesterday's game...or any of the 4 prior games.

I would agree, but Joe never dealt with a transfer portal. Any player can leave at any time.

What coaching incompetency? Seider didn't have any fumbles on Saturday. My god.
