First of all, I don't think anyone will be hired until July 1 at the earliest, but here is my biased list on people that have been talked about and some personal picks.

John Cohen- Most obvious candidate, and I think he probably gets offered the job at the very least. Pros- Has shown that he can win in the SEC at a non-traditional baseball school. One of the most innovative coaches in America today- especially as far as hitting is concerned. Is familiar with the program and Byrne. Cons- Lack of postseason success and rumor that some players don't want him. I think a lot of people are making a mistake in just basing his career at UK. Cohen has also won at Missouri and Northwest Louisiana, and was probably the best hitting coach in the SEC at UF.

Dan McDonnell- Pros- Excellent recruiter, and took Louisville to CWS in first try. Is familiar with the state of Mississippi. Cons- Associated with Ole Miss, which may cause a rift between some of the more ignorant fans, and his follow up year at Louisville he is only 19-14.

Pat Casey- Pros- won TWO National Championships at Oregon State. Also may have an association with Byrne from his days at OSU. Cons- Oregon is a LONG way from Mississippi. Especially for someone from Oregon who has lived there his entire life. Has a 10 year contract from OSU as well.

Paul Manieri- Pros- Really wanted MSU job at least at one time. Is familiar with the SEC and seems to genuinely like the atmosphere. Built programs at ND and did about as well as could be expected at Air Force. Cons- He's at LSU, is from Louisiana, and has only been there for two years. You would think he would like to try to build a program there.

Rick Jones- Pros- Turned Tulane into a power even while LSU was winning NC's. Has been known to reel in big name transfers, although Bourbon St. probably gets at least an assist. Also an excellent recruiter. Cons- Never has coached in the SEC.

Brian O'Conner- Pros- Has shown that he can coach and recruit and has built Virginia into a very solid program in about four years. Cons- Same as Jones, but at least Jones has shown that he can recruit in Mississippi at least a little.

Steve Smith- Pros- Ties to Polk and has done a good job at Baylor while having to compete with Texas and A&M for plaeyrs. Cons- Is a Baylor alum, and probably would bring back much of the same staff from previous MSU teams- many that were considered good but not great. Probably is a what you see is what you get choice.

Buck Showalter- Pros- BIG name, would probably make National headlines. Has ties to Polk and was known for player development and has a great eye for talent. Cons- Most Big Leaguer to College transitions have been failures or average at best moves. See Tony Gwynn at San Diego State and Don Kessinger to Ole Miss. Has not recruited in his life and has been out of college baseball for 30 years. Would be a huge gamble.

Mike Kinneson- Pros- Only coach in Mississippi to win a NC. Is familiar with the state and is a no-nonesense coach who would probably be a very welcome addition to MSU. Teams are always solid. Cons- Has never coached at the D-I level and the SEC is probably a lot more treacherous than the Gulf South Conference.

Tommy Raffo- Pros- Gives continuity, would keep Diamond Girls taken care of and best of all, we wouldn't have to listen to Ron ***** about how his guy wasn't given a shot after every loss. Cons- No experience, and has really only shown to be an average at best assistant. Would be a major gamble, and would have to win over an already pissed off fan base that probably won't give him much of a chance.

I think the reason he's not getting mentioned is because he turned LSU down a couple of years ago. But that doesn't necessarily mean he would turn us down. Roy Williams turned North Carolina down a few years before he took that job.

pat casey - i'd love to have him, but i don't see us dragging him this far, especially long-term.

mcdonnell - i'd be a little hesitant to take a chance on a guy who had that much early success. i prefer to look at someone who has had success with his own players. yes, there aren't many guys on the list who have been to the CWS, but macmahon took us there in his first year, and we saw how that worked out. he was a decent coach, but i was never a fan and thought we could have done better.

cohen - his inability to make a deep postseason run concerns me a little, but not much. i think there are a lot of external factors that can attribute to that. he needs to show something this year. he just makes the most sence overall. i think some of these coaches could be overwhelmed with everything here, especially if they aren't immediately successful.

jones - don't know much about him, but have always been impressed with how tulane has managed to be so competitive year after year.

I will narrow this down to guys I think are candidates...

John Cohen- I am not sold on Cohen. He has never really had consistent success at any of his stops, look at his coaching record, a good year, a bad year, an average year, etc, I think we already have that, plus he hasn't been to many NCAA regionals...
1992 Missouri assistant coach 34-22
1993 Missouri assistant coach 30-19
1994 Missouri assistant coach 32-26
1995 Missouri assistant coach 19-34
1996 Missouri assistant coach 39-19 NCAA Regional
1997 Missouri assistant coach 31-27
1998 Northwestern State head coach 40-20 Southland Champions
1999 Northwestern State head coach 38-21
2000 Northwestern State head coach 30-26
2001 Northwestern State head coach 38-17 Southland Champions
2002 Florida assistant coach 37-21-1 NCAA Regional
2003 Florida assistant coach 46-19 NCAA Regional
2004 Kentucky head coach 24-30
2005 Kentucky head coach 29-27
2006 Kentucky head coach 44-17 NCAA Regional
2007 Kentucky head coach 34-19
2008 Kentucky head coach 26-8

Dan McDonnell- I don't care about the Ole Miss ties. If he is the best, he is the best. This is his first rodeo as a head coach, but plenty of Asst. Coach success. Here is his record...
The Citadel - Assistant Coach
1993 32-25 SoCon Tournament
1994* 32-34 NCAA East Regional
1995* 39-21 NCAA Mideast Regional
1996 33-26 SoCon Tournament
1997 37-21 SoCon Tournament
1998* 37-24 NCAA East Regional
1999* 41-20 NCAA Tallahassee Regional
2000* 39-20 SoCon Tournament
Mississippi - Assistant Coach
2001 38-21-1 NCAA Regional
2002 37-19 None
2003 35-27 NCAA Regional
2004 39-21 NCAA Regional
2005 48-20 Super Regional Final
2006 44-22 Super Regional Final
Louisville - Head Coach
2007 47-24 College World Series
2008 19-14

Pat Casey- I don't think there really is a chance here. Honestly, though, I think he lucked up and got some good pitchers over his last three years, as his teams haven't been exactly overpowering, just hot at the right time. But for fun, here is his record:
George Fox
1988 15-14
1989 22-14
1990 24-17
1991 24-21
1992 29-18
1993 26-16-1
1994 31-13

Oregon State
1995 25-24-1
1996 32-18-1
1997 38-12-1
1998 35-14-1
1999 19-35
2000 28-27
2001 31-24
2002 31-23
2003 25-28
2004 31-22
2005 46-12 CWS
2006 50-16 CWS Nat. Champs
2007 49-18 CWS Nat. Champs
2008 16-12

Paul Manieri- Why would he make a lateral (if that) move?

Rick Jones- Would be an interesting hire, but would he survive without transfers?
1994 41-24 NCAA Regional
1995 32-26
1996 43-20 NCAA Regional
1997 40-21
1998 48-15 NCAA Regional
1999 48-15 NCAA Regional
2000 38-22 NCAA Regional
2001 56-13 CWS
2002 36-27 NCAA Regional
2003 44-19 NCAA Regional
2004 41-21 NCAA Supers
2005 56-12 CWS
2006 43-21 NCAA Regional
2007 34-26
2008 24-11

Brian O'Conner- Limited amount of coaching experience, but he has taken a mediocre program to new heights quickly. He is also young, so he could be here for a while. He is a pitching coach which would be successful in our large, pitcher-friendly ballpark and he is an outstanding recruiter. He is my favorite for the job.
1995-2003 at Notre Dame Asst. Coach 399-160-1 6 NCAA Regionals, 1 CWS
2004 44-15 NCAA Regional
2005 41-20 NCAA Regional
2006 47-15 NCAA Regional
2007 45-16 NCAA Regional
2008 29-9

Steve Smith- Polk, only not as good.

Buck Showalter- Doesn't make sense.

Mike Kinneson- We are not a program that has to hire an unknown D1 commodity. It seems like he would be a good hire, but why isn't he already in D1?

Tommy Raffo- This season speaks for itself, although I like him personally.

</p>

Here's how that worked out. He went to super regionals in 2 of the next 3 seasons and then left Polk with a team that was a #1 seed and regional host, not to mention that had the most drafted players on any 1 team in MSU history. </p>

What about Lopez at Arizona? Horton, who was at CSF and now at Oregon. If we think we can go after whoever, might as well add those 2.

he was considered a failure following up Polk by some of our fanbase despite the success he had here. It's funny that the Legend came back and proceeded to host one regional and not make a trip to the Super Regionals until 2007. It's very common to hear MSU fans say the Pat Mac era was a failure when the facts clearly show his tenure to be pretty darn successful.</p>

A lot of the sheep resent him for A. following The Legend and B. leaving for UF.

Therefore, they paint him in a bad light despite the facts.

I do think that McMahon was going to eventually run our program in the ground, but I'm not sure that it would have been any worse than what we are going through right now.

Since Patty Mac was hired in 94 as the successor to be when Polk retired, I picked that as a starting point for a comparison. The columns are wins, losses, W/L %, SEC wins, SEC losses, SEC W/L %, SEC place, SEC tourney place, and NCAA appearances.

<table class="wikitable sortable" id="sortable_table_id_0" style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"> <tbody> <tr class="odd"> <td>1994</td> <td>Ron Polk</td> <td>36</td> <td>23</td> <td>.610</td> <td> 15</td> <td>12</td> <td>.556</td> <td>4th</td> <td>3rd (W)</td> <td>--</td> </tr> <tr class="even"> <td>1995</td> <td>Ron Polk</td> <td>34</td> <td>25</td> <td>.576</td> <td> 11</td> <td>16</td> <td>.407</td> <td>9th</td> <td>4th (W)</td> <td>--</td> </tr> <tr class="odd"> <td>1996</td> <td>Ron Polk</td> <td>38</td> <td>24</td> <td>.613</td> <td> 17</td> <td>13</td> <td>.567</td> <td>5th</td> <td>7th (T)</td> <td>Regionals</td> </tr> <tr class="even"> <td>1997</td> <td>Ron Polk</td> <td>47</td> <td>21</td> <td>.691</td> <td> 19</td> <td>11</td> <td>.633</td> <td>3rd</td> <td>7th (T)</td> <td>Regionals, College World Series</td> </tr> <tr class="odd"> <td>1998</td> <td>Pat McMahon</td> <td>42</td> <td>23</td> <td>.646</td> <td>14</td> <td>15</td> <td>.483</td> <td>6th</td> <td>3rd (T)</td> <td>Regionals, College World Series</td> </tr> <tr class="even"> <td>1999</td> <td>Pat McMahon</td> <td>42</td> <td>21</td> <td>.667</td> <td>15</td> <td>14</td> <td>.517</td> <td>6th</td> <td>3rd (T)</td> <td>Regionals</td> </tr> <tr class="odd"> <td>2000</td> <td>Pat McMahon</td> <td>41</td> <td>20</td> <td>.672</td> <td>17</td> <td>10</td> <td>.630</td> <td>4th</td> <td>7th (T)</td> <td>Regionals, Super Regionals</td> </tr> <tr class="even"> <td>2001</td> <td>Pat McMahon</td> <td>39</td> <td>24</td> <td>.619</td> <td>17</td> <td>13</td> <td>.567</td> <td>4th (T)</td> <td>1st</td> <td>Regionals, Super Regionals</td> </tr> <tr class="odd"> <td>2002</td> <td>Ron Polk</td> <td>34</td> <td>24</td> <td>.586</td> <td>14</td> <td>15</td> <td>.483</td> <td>7th</td> <td>5th (T)</td> <td>--</td> </tr> <tr class="even"> <td>2003</td> <td>Ron Polk</td> <td>42</td> <td>20</td> <td>.677</td> <td>17</td> <td>12</td> <td>.586</td> <td>4th</td> <td>3rd (T)</td> <td>Regionals</td> </tr> <tr class="odd"> <td>2004</td> <td>Ron Polk</td> <td>35</td> <td>24</td> <td>.593</td> <td>13</td> <td>17</td> <td>.433</td> <td>9th</td> <td>--</td> <td>Regionals</td> </tr> <tr class="even"> <td>2005</td> <td>Ron Polk</td> <td>42</td> <td>22</td> <td>.656</td> <td>13</td> <td>16</td> <td>.448</td> <td>7th</td> <td>1st</td> <td>Regionals</td> </tr> <tr class="odd"> <td>2006</td> <td>Ron Polk</td> <td>37</td> <td>23</td> <td>.617</td> <td>12</td> <td>17</td> <td>.414</td> <td>9th</td> <td>--</td> <td>Regionals</td> </tr> <tr class="even"> <td>2007</td> <td>Ron Polk</td> <td>38</td> <td>22</td> <td>.633</td> <td>15</td> <td>13</td> <td>.536</td> <td>4th</td> <td>7th (T)</td> <td>Regionals, Super Regionals, College World Series</td> </tr> </tbody> </table>
Patty Mac was at worst the equal of Polk in on the field success and a reasonable case can be made that he was even a bit better than Polk. His era was anything but a failure.

If he doesn't go to Fla he is entering his 10th year here and still coaching in the SEC. Bad judgment Patty Mac.

What about Daron Schoenrock?

Haven't really heard his name mentioned. He was an assistant under Polk and has done a pretty well rebuilding the Memphis Tigers. (Granted they suck this year but that didn't stop us from losing to them)

then our list is going to be long come season's end.

On a serious note, I want nothing to do with Shoenrock. We can do better than that. I can't think of a single Polk assistant I want to hire.

But I do think he may have been encouraged to go after the Florida job as many of the Polk sheep were never going to be satisfied with him no matter what he did and they really didn't want to face seeing Polk in the other dugout for an SEC series (we didn't play Georgia during his 2 years there except for 1 game in the SECT but they were about to rotate back onto the schedule).

At least that's what I thought he did. And FLA definitely has the resources in money and talent to build an top notch baseball program.

He's just not that good of a coach. I do think Memphis COULD be pretty good if they hired someone that can keep the talent there.

Also, as far as Lopez, he's a good coach, but he's also a guy that has burned some bridges and is known for being an ******* to pretty much everyone.

are ********. The players that i knew that played for Mac AND Polk loved Polk and hated Mac. But Mac won more. There are players/parents that don't like Bianco. He wins. And everyone's favorite Mike Kinnison is not the kindest on the field.

As for Schoenrock, that hire would excite me about as much as hiring Steve Alford as our basketball coach.

I think Lopez crosses the line from what I understand.

I actually think that our team needs someone who is at least a little bit of an *******.
