I think they SHOULD go away, but I have no idea what these baby boomer leaders will actually do.

They aren't needed, this isn't basketball and/or baseball where they give some underdog a shot to win a spot in the Dance. They are going to be the best teams in the conferences, who are already vying for the playoff. In that vein, they may matter to the smaller conferences. But either way, just award a title based on record. Then have some type of tie-breaker for the playoff auto spot.

And by the way.....expand the playoff to 16. Conference titles will mean even less, because there's no bye to be earned.

Nope. SEC Championship game is like a bonus major bowl/playoff game, except SEC gets BOTH halves of the revenue. Same for Big 10 and every other conference. They're not going anywhere. And, secondarily, with so many teams in each conference, it's the only way to have a half-way legitimate conference champion.

By expanding to 16 teams, you would have 8 first round games rather than 4. That more than makes up the revenue gap

With comments like Kiffin made.. you know he's saying whats being talked about that everyone else is scared to say.

Read where you can basically kiss the 4 highest conference champions being seeded 1-4 in the re-boost of this. As right now it's a joke a team like Boise may get the bye.... once that gets removed, the conference championship will mean even less and more dominoes will fall....

Changes will happen. How soon is the question.

Nope. Why expand to 16 and eliminate conference championship games when you can expand to 16 and keep the conference championship games? And don't say "too many games." Nobody cares. Nobody.

Who really cares about this? Nowadays conferences are nothing more than 'alliances' who schedule each other to make the most money. Heck, if you have 4 teams at 7-2 or whatever, award them all titles. Keeps fans engaged.

Espns 10 year deal with the SSC includes the championship game so I’d guess it’s going nowhere. Plus I’d imagine the broadcast rights to that far outweigh an additional team getting in the playoff.

When the playoff expands, there will be pushback on the conference title games. It'll heat up big time.

Only if the SEC goes to 9 conference games.

Good revenue for the league. The playoff game revenue will not help the league nearly as much even if we load up the first round.

I read somewhere that the SEC is discussing the addition of 3-4 game on the afternoon prior to the SECCG in the evening for both Additional Revenue and to give the CFP Committee clear differentiation between the #3 & #4 teams.

Yep. This should be a very clear indication of where the SEC (and Big 10) stand on conference championship games. They don't want to eliminate them. They want to add to them. More revenue they get to keep and not share with other conferences. They couldn't care less about a 17-game season. A few years after this goes through, they'll be pushing to make the conference championship a 4-team conference playoff, adding an 18th game.

they'll get out of the champ game requirement with a 9th regular season game.

They need to work it out so both teams in the championship game gets into playoffs. The winner gets a bye and loser plays in first round. Expand the playoffs to accommodate.

This will happen in the next playoff format. The current format is only for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Expect a 14-team playoff with 4 guaranteed bids for the Big 10 and SEC starting in 2026.

they arent gonna give 4 guarneteed bigs to 2 of the conference and not the other 2.

The G4 has stayed together this entire time. they arent going to let 2 of them up the other 2... the format has to be approved by all the conferences... there is simply no way this is going to happen.

What may happen is the announce the field of 14-16.. whatever it is BEFORE the conference champ games.. then seed after. Could be a route if they decide to keep champ games.. that way conf games games only effect seeding, not who gets in

So now what do you do when 4 or 5 teams are tied? They will determine who goes to the championship game by opponents win percentage. So do 4 teams hang a SEC Championship banner? Ole Miss already hasn't the SEC West championship but never played in Atlanta for the SEC title.

I’m assuming the schools would have to vote for this and I am not sure they would get a majority. The 3rd place team will more than likely always get into the playoffs and are sitting in the catbird seat. They don’t have to risk losing a game that will potentially knock them out or injury with an additional game.

listen to the coaches talk. They've been against 9 game schedules for years and its yet to happen.

Kiffin coming out and saying that there are teams that dont want to play in the game.. because the risk/reward isnt there..... Is loud.

Ultimately, the SEC and Big 10 will get what they want. There may be a 2nd guaranteed bid for ACC and Big 12 involved, but if the SEC and Big 10 want 4 guaranteed bids, I bet they ultimately get them.

The sec and big 10 cant pull out at this point. They are stuck for the immediate future.. and they are tied in with the other two conference. Each having an equal vote. There is zero way the other two are going to yield those spots and that power to the Big10 and SEC. If one gets it, all will.

But the sec and big10 will want as many teams in as possible.. so they arent worried about the 2nd guarenteed spot. They'll always get that 2nd team in... and they know by guarenteeing a 2nd team in for those other conference they'll be losing spots their own teams can get them... look no farther than this season.

The 2nd guarenteed spot isnt happening. Makes zero sense.

The SEC Championship will have higher ratings than at least one of the first round games and will outdraw more than one of the on campus games.

Plus, I’m pretty sure the SEC is contractually obligated to play that game for the next decade as part of their media rights package with Disney.

I took the Kiffin quote as a guy that wasn’t going to make it anyway and tried to turn it into a positive. If he really doesn’t want to be the first guy to lead Ole Miss to Atlanta, then that’s some pretty 17ing weak рussy аss sнit.

think he'd rather be the first guy to lead his team to the playoffs and be set up as best as possible for a run at a national championship.... but i get what your saying

say what you want about kiffin.. but he's one of the more straight shooters in the business.... think those words echo a lot of what people are thinking.

I think he knows how to play the media and the fanbase. He can say “other coaches are telling me they don’t want to play in the conference championship”, but realistically, he knows his fanbase thought this was the year they might finally make it to Atlanta and he has almost zero chance of making that happen. The smart play here is questioning if going to a conference championship game is even a good thing. He’s got the media debating the question, so I guess it’s working.

i dont disagree with all of this.... but i think fan base was more playoffs or bust... than it ever was atlanta or bust.

I feel certain that the SEC & Big 10 already have this worked out although the rest of college football may not be aware. The SEC & Big 10 have all the money and leverage. The underlying threat from the SEC & Big 10 will always be that these two conference will just hold their own exclusive playoff and everyone else can figure out a plan for themselves.

The SEC & Big 10 have made it clear that they will abandon the CFP if the other conference don't play by their rules.

lol... where?

the sec and big10 may very well be concocting the next college football landscape. But they (smartly so) realize at this point they need some of the other conferences to help this manifest.

They arent going to abandon anything in its current state and have never said so.... they got the deal they want in this set up. 8 of the 12 teams are coming from these conferences.... but they made sure the rules were equal to all the conferences.
