"Cohen is arguably the best young coach in America. He's considered one of the best hitting instructors and a relentless recruiter. "-from the following link.

Yeah, we don't need that around here.

why would we want a young agressive coach that wants to win? I kind of like the apathy- sort of gothic in a wholesome way.

After reading that article, it's obvious that the writer doesn't know how most of us really feel about Polk. Of course, if Cohen doesn't want to come, we should look elsewhere, althogh I would have been a lot more surprised if Cohen had answered "Hell yes, I'm gone."

One major difference between us and UK basketball as far as replacing a legend is that Rupp won NC's, and Polk hasn't done that, so Cohen would have a chance to build his legacy here as well.

I bet will address this Monday. I don't think he takes it. Here is why.

He wouldn't have Polk's blessing. Raffo is an old teammate he might have to fire. I just don't believe he will want to come into a situation like that.

If he comes out Monday and says he will listen, well then we might have a chance. But I look for him to say he has no intrest at this time.
Polk is no dumbass. He timed this well along with his strong endorsement of Tommy. I don't know if he and Cohen have talked privately but by endorsing Raffo he is publicly telling Cohen, Smith et al, to stay away.

after his SEC championships season he told a friend on campus that he would love to have the job when #1 retired. He still stays in close contact with his friends on campus!!! Maybe that's a good sign.

Polk has sent a very strong and very public message to all of his former players and coaches to not even think about making a run for the MSU job. It's looking more and more like Polk has planned this perfectly. The only guy from inside the family we can probably hire is Raffo and I can't see us going outside the family to make a hire.

batters to take strike 1 every at bat? That's what a real hitting coach does. In fact, a real hitting coach encourages fouling off the next pitch even though it's over his shoulders just to keep the pitcher honest. I just don't feel he does his job if he doesn't want them 0-2 on every count. That in itself shows he believes in his hitters and thinks they need a greater challenge. I mean, we're M-State damn it. We've got Ron Polk. Our players are so good, we like starting out 0-2 every count. And who needs home runs? That just clears bases instead of challenging our next young batter to see what he may do in a pressure situation. Seriously though guys, have you thought about who Raffo hires as a pitching coach? That's a scary thought. I mean, the guy has no contacts to call up. Who would want to put himself on the line with a 1st year guy anyway? I'm sure we'll do the M-State suffle with that also and keep McNickle. I'd expect no less.

You can bet your sweet *** the powers that be (LT and Polk) will pull the strings on this one.

Byrne is a pawn at this point.

I do however wish he would step up and show some sack and tell them "Hell no, it's not your decision to make, f ya'll"..........

Bad thing is, we'll never know...........

and fear the day he was hired. Does GB have the sack to do what needs to be done? That question will be answered shortly,it seems.

Smith (Baylor), Marinieri (LSU), and the head coach from Air Force. Word is that Cohen has upset someone in the athletic department, and LT will be making the hire. Don't be surprised if he remains the AD, and Byrne know this for sure. Greg has actually had some discussions with others, and has openly stated his concern with his "position" at MSU.

This is a general reply:

Who cares if our next coach has Polk's blessing or not? Polk can only do as much to our baseball program as he is allowed to.

As far as Cohen firing Raffo, while I will admit that is likely what would happen, but Raffo doesn't necessarily have to be fired. He could be retained, he could be reassigned as an assistant AD, or he could be the director of the baseball camp and the Diamond Girls or some other BS like that. This might be the best solution.

As far as Cohen not coming- let's not make the mistake of putting all our eggs in one basket. There are plenty of good coaches out there that we should look at regardless. Also, any coaching search should not take place until after the CWS. That would alse mean that LT would be gone by that time. Regardless, Byrne needs to take charge somehow.

Smith (Baylor), Marinieri (LSU), and the head coach from Air Force.
The list you mention has one notable person excluded. Raffo. Is that the case? Or is he at the top of the list like so many people here fear?

Smith would certainly not be a bad hire.

But I think a lot of things could change Tuesday. Here's what I think happens: Vance Watson is not an idiot, and logic says that he will recognize that the power vacuum in the AD is bad for the university. Also, as new president he will probably want to do something public to make people realize he's running this ship now, and we should all stop bitching about Doc this, Doc that. So I think we have 1 AD by the end of the week. Also, I think he recognizes how rediculous it would make us look for one president to fire the AD, appoint another, then resign, another president be appointed, who re-demotes the just promoted AD, and rehires the old AD before he can get his stuff packed up.

Here's why, does the reporter honestly think Cohen's going to jump out of his shoes when asked about the job? Of course he's going to play it cool and say not at this moment. He's got a top 10 team with only about a 1/3 of a season complete. Kentucky can talk new stadium, new this new that but bottomline is Cohen is ours if we have anyone in the athletic dept. with the sense to go after him. We're capable of a real search and could very well do better than Cohen but I just don't think we'll find a more perfect candidate. This is a golden opportunity but I'm afraid it's not going to matter.

I don't think we get Manieri either, but I'm not surprised by your response either.

considering what he gets paid, their tradition of winning National Championships, fan base, being a lottery state, and controls the states recruiting, that is probably going to be most peoples response

Well he shouldn't.

If he gets the keys to the car, he should drive it how he wants.

I know I wouldn't listen to that crusty old fart.

but then again you didn't play for him or play with his hand picked guy. It would be a bad situation. I don't think Cohen would want to get mixed up in a "family" feud

He's doing less at LSU than Polk's been doing at MSU lately. He's in over his head in the SEC.

but he is going thru alot of roster changeover to get the people he wants there. One of my former players that beat us in S'ville last year flunked out of school and is back pitching JC ball. He was slated to be their #2 this year. He better get more talent in there soon or he'll be back coaching in the snow

He won a lot at Notre Dame, but they didn't have any competition at all. He coached in 9 regionals at Notre Dame (4 at home) and only won 1 of them. He did have the super regional win over Florida St. that year, but his history against good competition hasn't been good at all.

hell could Cohen have pissed off? It's either got to be Byrne or LT. I mean does it really matter if he pissed off Mike Nemeth or Duncan McKenzie?

the Air Force coach? is that a joke?

anybody know this guy's track record on rumors?

Mike Hutcheon is Air Force's coach and a Polk protegee, I'm pretty sure. If he is in the mix, who knows? Edited to add garcia, not baja. I agree with you 8 on the "who could have cohen pissed off" thing. Hell, Cohen was last on campus(officially), what 92????

Smoke didn't leave him very much except for a bunch of 5'11" guys who were average at best. Manieri basically cut all of them last year and is having to start from the ground up.

If we aren't careful, we'll end up doing the same.

at air force he is 33-175 so I guess it wouldn't be that bad of a hire.

I was just alerting you as to who Air Force's coach was. In no way was I giving an endorsement. Then aGAIN we are M-State, so who knows? I predict that it won't be Cohen, and for the record, I don't want Raffo(great guy). I think that it will be TR, unless someone like Steve Smith shows serious interest. And I think that would be a great hire, myself. Sadd makes a lotta sense about Cohen. Former player is one thing, former coach is another.

Heard this weekend that two of the cigar boys are adamently opposed to Raffo, as are many in the Ath Department. Again, the three I heard from some folks were Marinari, Steve Smith, and the AF guy.

Marinari suposidly wants the job. Does not like the Louisiana lifestyle....and loves the Jewel.

even gets a pamphlet advertising our job, then I just quit as a fan. That is absurd. I'd probably rather have Raffo.

I'd buy that. He's always had good things to say about State's baseball program.
