"The name was developed through research and input from students, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees, the community and prospective students and their families, according to a spokesman for the universities."

Let's see ...

- there is already a University of Pennsylvania
- there are already Commonwealth Campuses for The Pennsylvania State University

The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education is merging (to an extent) Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield. The new name for the merged universities is Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania. The name is contingent on the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which is the accreditation body, approving the application for the accreditation of Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania from the three former universities.

Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education did not have the political muscle to just close several of the under utualized public colleges. The answer was merger, just continues the waste of state funds.

Exactly. I fail to see how this "merger" is going to benefit anything, or reduce costs. I also just read where Bashar Hanna said the CUP name is not going to be public facing and diplomas will still say Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, etc.

I should note that in Oct. 21, 2021, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education announced the new name for the merger of Clarion, Edinboro and California University of Pennsylvania. Those three schools are now collectively called ...

Pennsylvania Western University (or the shortened version, PennWest).
