our neighbor has been the HC of our local high school team. The school is on the smaller side, and he has a roster of only 80 players FR to SR. Given the talent, he has been a successful coach for many years here. One of the things that we noticed is in the red zone he uses his entire roster in some novel ways. He tries to go "big body" whether running or passing. He will use a OL at FB and RB and straight up the middle power runs. He also will use all his TE players as WR, and maybe only one pure WR. He uses the whole roster creatively. He does similar when he is defending in red zone against the other teams. He will put DEs ad LB and bring in the beef on DL. In HS this has worked well for him, but not sure how it would fly in college. Some NFL and college teams do resort to this type of strategy on occasion.

do you think that Penn State could use something like this?

You should send an e-mail to Franklin and/or Yurcich to see what they think.

Do you think that the Penn State McAndrew board should start a forum or specific thread just for your thoughts and questions?

PSU did early in the season with great success when they put multiple TE's in the backfield. By the end of the season its like they completely forgot they ever did it.

Probably could. Probably should.

Didn't the 49ers do something like that against GreenBay? Used #71 as a H-back to get their running game going.

Of the offensive coordinators over the last several seasons, Yurcich has been the most creative with red zone packages. Its been a trend to go 6-OL recently and I think it's had moderate success. Always depends on your opponent though.
