matched our in-state rival's pay, and didn't whine about "balancing the budget" or being the poorest school in the land. Now let's hope he earns it.

The eight guys above Croom have either won a national title, won a BCS game, or both.

Houston Nutt did nothing but win at Arkansas and was on the verge of a BCS game in multiple years

I'm really not understanding how Brooks and Croom are even in the neighborhood of a Steve Spurrier of Phil Fulmer. It's safe to say that they have uphill battles winning at MSU and KY, but the disparity in actual accomplishments is laughable.

Break it down per week. You'll really start crying.

But hey, if we want to play with the big boys, we have no choice.

A bit premature in my opinion. Nutt isn't a great coach but I think we are getting a much better deal if we are getting him for the same price tag that Croom comes with. Not a knock against Croom but I would have let him put together one more good season before I gave him the big raise. It's not like he had other AD's knocking at his door and was about to bolt.

Do you seriously contend that it was preferable to keep croom on the bottom after last year's admittedly mystifying results? Yeah, I'm sure Byrne wanted to be 'that guy' who croom's agent paints as the guy who refused to play ball with the only black head coach in the SEC. Don't put this on Byrne. this ******** goes on Alabama and their ridiculous contract. It skewed everything.

I disagree. if he does come back and have another good year then there will be other people coming after him and you want to make sure you showed that you wanted to keep him when he started winning

Croom in no way deserves this much, but it is just a reality in the SEC that you have to pay this much. I am just hoping that we have a good year next year...then maybe he will get attention from other schools.

If you don't have confidence in him, fire him. Otherwise keeping him dead last in the league would be embarrassing.

what little leverage you had in getting him to hire a new oc or change the scheme. I still doubt Croom gets any real looks from schools that would be considered a step up from MSU. He's got a long way to go to get to .500. </p>

I seem to remember that when we hired Nutt with his salary, we were WAY overpaying for a coach. Are you now overpaying as well?

I do find it funny that the number exactly matches Nutt's contract. I guarantee this move has everything to do with Nutt's pay. I'd also be willing to bet that in his contract, they've set it up to increase by 100k per year so that he'll be getting paid $1.8M the next year and $1.9 the year after that.

I'm honestly just surprised it wasn't announced as $1.71M.

but I could see someone in the NFL possibly (key word here) take a chance on him. He has NFL ties, OC coordinator experience in the NFL and now has won in the SEC at a lower tier school. The NFL sometimes goes after guys like this- see Steve Mariucci.

At any rate, if we keep paying our head football coach 900,000 or whatever, when everyone else is over 1.6, people are going to get the impression that we're not trying and don't care. We don't want that. In my field of work, we would call this more of a "market adjustment" than a raise. I do think he deserved a raise, though.

He, Nutt, and every other coach in the SEC should send a thank you note to Nick Saban.

You're damn right about that. There were quite a number of people who said at the time of Saban's contract that it would shake things up. That was 2 years ago, and I believe the highest paid coach in the SEC made about $2.25M a year. Now, $1.7M puts you in the bottom third of the league.

All it tells you is that no matter what we do we'll never be able to keep up with the big boys.

He took over one of the biggest disasters this conference has seen in many, many years, had no experience as a HC at all and finally got us back to a bowl game. Nutt was effectively somebody else's treasure (and I think upig is crazy to hate him like they do). He will do much better than O, but it's not like y'all went out and stole one from the big boys. I think that upig's glass ceiling was scratched by Nutt as much as can be rationally expected with such a shallow recruiting base. If not for two once-in-a-lifetime players, he might have never done ****. I think it would be shameful for us to have our coach making less than yours when you consider the circumstances. Dead even seems about right for now...let the future dictate further raises, contracts, etc.

.....back it up. If we somehow suck next season, and the offense(most likely) is the cause of it, then he better listen to "suggestions" from Mr. Byrne.

and Croom seems to be improving as a head coach and learning from past mistakes. But, to use the term "dead even" when comparing Croom and Houston Nutt is laughable at this point.

Nutt is a proven head coach who has been to several bowls and 2 SEC championship games. Croom has one good year under his belt, and to some of us at least, that year looks to have been a bit of a fluke. We'll find out this fall. But Croom didn't deserve an almost 100% raise just on the basis of that one good year. We should have raised him to about $1.3M and then give him another raise if he has another winning season.

Yes. I think all the ******** are overpayed. On the sliding scale, though, yes, I think Croom may be overpayed. The only thing that we know for sure is that time will tell. I DO know that if Croom has another good year and a big boy comes calling, and we hadn't upped his contract, he'd probably leave. Now, we probably keep him.

No doubt Croom's contract was influenced by Nutt's. The number 1.7 kind of clues you in. But Croom's contract actually has provisions that are dependent on certain things, like APR. It's really not a childish pissing contest between the two schools, dude. It's what you have to friggin' do nowadays if you want to keep your coach. They made a long term commitment to Croom and it looks like it could possibly pay off in big ways. I sort of think it's premature, but what do I know.

I saw your post on Nafoom about how State has a inferiority complex about UM back during the Cohen hire. I don't believe that, and even if I am wrong, it's no worse than UM's to State. I mean, ****, look at the venom you all spewed after we made a grand slam hire. They are damn near equal, everything considered. One is better in one area, one another. I personally wouldn't trade places with anyone in the country, and I'm sure most Ole Miss fans wouldn't either. So what's up with all this 1.71 ********? Now, State (as a whole) DOES have a complex about Alabama, as UM does LSU. Let's put that argument to bed, OK? I get sick of going back and forth with this eggbowl ****, as hard as that is to believe. We all know deep down that we have comparable programs, but our egos won't allow us to admit it. Yeah, that goes for you too, someonestole....damnit.

is that we are now budgeting a competitive salary for our head football coach, no matter who he is. Because I assure you that if Mr. Croom doesn't cut it, his replacement will cost at least $1.7.

It may be a tad premature, but we were gonna end up there soon with Croom or somebody else. I'm betting Croom will earn it, but hey, I'm always optimistic this time of year.

But, why should a guy that took over a disaster and has them in much better shape in 4 years be making less than a first-year retread who was fired from a 2nd- or 3rd-tier job? As I'm sure you know, winning in anything at umiss is the exception to the rule. You may want to wait until your boy actually does something for you before you get too wooly about him.

So if Nutt goes 3-9 his first 3 years then goes 7-5 and takes to the libery bowl should we double his salary? I wouldn't have sold the farm to keep Croom just yet. You might be having buyer's remorse at the end of this season or it might look like a good move. Regardless it was premature as Croom had absolutley zero other job opportunities. If you can't look at Nutt's resume and Croom's resume and see who is overpaying then I can't help you. Croom deserved a raise after last year but I wouldn't have basically locked myself into 4 more years of Croom without seeing something resembling sustained success. Nutt can never win a game at Ole Miss. That isn't relevant. At this point in their careers in 2008, there is no way no how Croom should be making as much as Nutt.
