Great week for the U.S. riders in the Tour of California this past week. Although this is obviously a U.S. race, many of the top teams and riders from Europe were there. Levi Leipheimer won for the second straight year and David Zabriskie and Chris Horner finished 6th and 7th. In yesterday's final stage, George Hincapie went out on an early 10-man breakaway, then outclassed the 4 remaining riders at the finish to win the stage.

If Astana doesn't ride in the Tour d'France, there won't be a legitimate champion and everyone will know it. As the announcers on VS said yesterday, the only connection between the current Astana team and last year's Astana team is the sponsor. The management and riders are a completely new team this year. You'd think at a time when sponsors are pulling out of cycling altogether, they'd be inclined to reward a sponsor who stayed in with a completely new team after what happened to Astana last year.
the problem is that the Frenchies are so concerned about the fact that no French rider has won since Hinault that they will go to every possible means to limit the field. The doping thing just makes it easier for them to do so. Regardless of who rides it will still be a great race but let's not forget the other 2 big tours, Italy and Spain. This may be the year for them to get a bit more press. They are still huge in Europe, they just don't get the US press since his lordship Lance didn't ride them.
